Calves & Weanlings
There was an increased entry of 103 calves forward today. Th sale included the quarterly Semex and Norbreck Genetics show, for which we thank our sponsors for their continued support, as well as todays judge Mr J Burrow, Grayrigg who kindly resided over the show. He awarded the prizes as follows:

Class 1- Beef Bull Calf

1st Lot 881 from Wallbank Farms Ltd

Beef bull calves still on milk sold to £300 on several occasions, Firstly for British Blues from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping, Herefords from TE&M Kidd, Ellel, British Blues from JK&BJ Birkett, Morecambe and Aberdeen Angus’s from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Other bull calves regularly sold at £230 to £290 with younger sorts £180 to £220. Dairy bulls sold to £130 for young Montbeliarde from Stanworth Agricultural, Chipping.
Several weaned bull calves forward sold to £435 for British Blue x from H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Nateby with other British Blue x to £380 from JK&BJ Birkett, Morecambe who also sold an Aberdeen Angus at £355 with Herefords to £350 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel. Weaned dairy bulls sold to £250 for a Holstein Friesians from Stoney Lane Farm, Nateby.
An entry of predominantly younger Heifer calves sold to £250 for a British Blue x from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore with other British Blues achieving £245 from DJ Clarke Farming Ltd, Barnacre and £240 from Barber Farms, Garstang. Younger heifer calves generally £160 to £200 with the smallest sorts less.
Several weaned heifer calves sold to £390 for a British Blue x from JG Thornley, Kirkham who sold others at £360 and Aberdeen Angus x at £300. Hereford x heifers also achieved £300 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel.
A small entry of stirks saw Aberdeen Angus x steers sell to £410 from JG Thornley Ltd, Kirkham.

Dairy Cattle
The popular fortnightly sale of dairy saw a top price of £2500 achieved for a pedigree heifer from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe who sold others at £2350 and £2120. A pedigree heifer from B&V Swan, Chorley achieved £1950. All new calved heifers averaged £2230. A consignment of bulling heifers from GM Strong, Penrith sold to £880 twice with others at £820.
A large crowd of buyers present looking for all classes and types of dairy cattle with more required to satisfy demand.

Store Cattle
The popular weekly sale of store cattle saw a fast and competitive trade for all classes and types which saw a top price of £1660 for a pen of four Aberdeen Angus x steers from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling. Closely followed by British Blue x from JG&GM Bracken, Catterall achieving £1620 with a Charolais x from DE&SM Moorehouse, Natland selling at £1510. The £1500 barrier was also broken by L Parson & Sons, Levens selling Aberdeen Angus’s and Limousins at £1500. Heavy well fleshed steers regularly sold at £1350 to £1480, with others suitable for finishing at £1250 to £1350. Dairy steers sold to £1270 for a Fleckvieh from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling with MRI steers to £1130 from Barlow Bros, Croston. All steers forward today averaged £1265.
Heifers sold to a top price of £1430, again for a pen of four Aberdeen Angus, this time from RG&B Lewis, Middleton. British Blues sold to £1400 from JG&GM Bracken, Catterall as did Aberdeen Angus’s from L Parsons & Sons, Levens. This was closely followed by British Blues achieving £1380 from J&JA Burrow, Grayrigg. Herefords sold to £1270 from JW Atkinson, Bentham with Shorthorns achieving £1200 from EW&CR Clegg & Son, Stalmine. All heifers averaged £1208.

OTM / Cast Cattle
107 cull cows achieved an overall market averaged of 169p/kg with other half the entry being dairy cows. Well fleshed beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Bazadaise from BD&PM Gill & Son, Ingleton with Limousin x to 224.5p/kg from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal. Other heavy well fleshed beef cows regularly sold between 185 and 205p/kg with those suitable for finishing 165 and 190p/kg, depending of quality and type. Dairy cows sold to 209.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from SH&M Batty & Son, Quernmore with this price also achieved by A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel selling a Montbeliarde. Holstein Friesians sold to 197.5p/kg from RT Halhead, Cockerham. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold at 170 to 190p/kg with medium sorts 150 to 170p/kg and parlour types 115 to 140p/kg, depending on quality and type.
Top grossing cow was a Bazadaise from BD&PM Gill, Ingleton achieving £1766. This was closely followed by a Holstein Friesians from RT Halhead, Cockerham grossing £1718.
OTM heifers sold to 214p/kg for a Fleckvieh from F&E Harrison, Wray with a Holstein Friesians from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham achieving £1431.
Steers sold to a top of 214p/kg for a Holstein Friesians from RH&RA Fawcett, Burton with British Blue x selling to £1378 from PG Thornton, Scorton.
Several cull bulls forward sold to 199.5p/kg for a Hereford from R Escolme, Bay Horse with a top price of £1965 achieved for a Charolais from CI Briggs, Ambleside.
