J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep. Tuesday 24th May 2022

Pigs
A mixed show of pigs were forward at J36’s fortnightly sale. Prime hogs from RE Capstick, Skipton sold to a top of £92. The best end prime pigs were regularly selling at £1 to £1.10 per kilo. A nice sow with 11 piglets from D Broadman, Horwich sold to £225. There were more buyers in the market for weaners, 10 White weaners from Messrs Brownrigg, Kirkby Stephen sold to £48.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot
Another wonderful trade for sheep with lambs at foot saw a busy ring of buyers ensuring that all speciation’s were eagerly bid for. The consignment from IM Jaeban, Cockermouth led the way selling aged Continental ewes with strong twin lambs to £300 with aged Continental ewes with single Continental lambs selling to £255. The consignment from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston sold Cheviot shearlings with twin Beltex lambs to £265 with Texel shearlings with single Beltex lambs to £250 and Cheviot shearlings with single Beltex lambs sold to £210. Two crop Mule ewes with twin Texel lambs at foot sold to £242 from RG&H Preece, Roeburndale. Mule shearlings with Texel twins sold to £240 from C Barker, Morecambe. More hill ewes forward today saw mixed aged Rough Fell ewes with twin Texel lambs selling to £178 from M&J Stewardson, Bowness on Windermere. Rough Fells with single Texel lambs sold to £138 from the same home. Broken mouthed Welsh mountain ewes with single Beltex lambs sold to £100 from Messrs Buckle, Kirkby Stephen. Broken mouthed Herdwick ewes with single Texel lambs at foot sold to £90 from S Proctor, Selside.

Spring Lambs
The strongest trade seen so far for spring lambs at J36 with the ring now complemented by buyers all looking to purchase spring lambs with more required each week. The consignment from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe led the way selling 50kg Texels to £164, 51kg Texels to £162 with both lots being purchased by Westmorland Services. This was followed by 45kg Texels from the same home selling to £160 purchased by Plumgarths Farm Shop. Other Texel lambs sold to £160 weighing 47kg were consigned by S Proctor, Selside purchased by Westmorland Services who also purchased the top price Charollais lambs at £160 from RJ Stott, Stainton. Texel lambs from TE&J Wadsworth & Son, Kendal sold to £159 purchased by Browns Quality Meats, Ulverston. Other Texel lambs sold to £158 from R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands. Hampshire lambs peaked at £157 from J&O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £148 at 41kg from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor, with 39kg Beltex lambs from the same home selling to £145 or 372p/kg. Top p/kg this week was 380p/kg from R Lawrence, Grange Over Sands. All spring lambs forward averaged 320p/kg with handy weights averaging 340p/kg. All spring lambs forward averaged £135.58. 45% of the pens of spring lambs forward sold in excess of £140.

Prime Hoggs
There was the full spectrum of hoggs forward today which saw well fleshed and heavy weighted hoggs in big demand and eagerly bid for. Heavy weight Texels led the way twice topping at £168, firstly from Thrimby Farms, Penrith and also from KJ Knight, Kirkby in Furness. Heavy weight Charollais and Texel hoggs from TA Teasdale, Newton in Cartmel sold to £166 and £155. Mule hoggs peaked at £142 from DM&D Cook, Ulverston whom sold Texels to £140. Hill hoggs saw Cheviots at 43kg peak at £125 from GM&A Jackson. Little Eccleston with Scotch Black faced from the same how to £115.

Cast Sheep
The cast sheep continue to sell to the recent highs, Texel ewes led the way selling to a top of £195 from E Dodgson, Kendal. The best Texel ewes were regularly selling at the £180-£190 mark with all Texel ewes forward averaging £134. Suffolk ewes sold to a top of £173 from TA Teasdale, Cartmel. The biggest jump in trade was Mule ewes with the best selling to £150 from SW Workington, Urswick. Medium fit Mule ewes were regularly selling the £120-£130 mark. Cheviot ewes led the hill section selling to £132 twice from J&T Hunter, Dent and JW&E Woof & son, Firbank. A wonderful pen of Swaledale ewes from JF&AW Sutton, Longsleddale sold to £128 with other pens selling to £122 from Thrimby Farms, Penrith. All Swaledale ewes forward averaged £92. Rough Fell ewes sold to a top of £128 from JB Bainbridge, Shap with others from the same home selling to £116.
All rams forward continue to sell to a similar trade as seen in previous week. Texel rams led the way selling to £118 from J Turnbull, Meathorpe. Other Texel rams sold to £166 from RT Colbear, Appleby with Leicester selling to £150 from J&C Airey, Urswick.
