J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Calves, Stirks, Store and OTM Cattle, Thursday 17th February 2022

Calves & Stirks
Eighty calves were forward with a full ring side of buyers in attendance, ensuring all calves were a sharper trade than seen at previous sales. British Blue bulls led the way selling to a top of £400 from A Pickthall, New Hutton with other British Blues selling to £380 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. All British Blue bull forward averaged £325. Native bred bull calves sold to a stronger trade with Aberdeen Angus’s selling twice to £340 from A Pickthall, New Hutton and JAH Walton & Son, Kirby Stephen. Many of the best Aberdeen Angus bulls sold over the £300 mark.
Heifer calves saw strong well fed calves eagerly bid for with younger, lesser sorts harder to place. A top of £310 was achieved twice, firstly for a Stabiliser heifer from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg and a British Blue heifer from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick. Other British Blue heifers sold to £305 twice from DR&C Galbraith, Grayrigg and J&B Morley, Great Asby.
A small show of Black and Whites were forward with a top of £100 from J&B Morley, Great Asby with others to £95 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth. All Black and Whites forward averaged £87.50.
Forty stirks were forward with all buyers showing more interest in all types of stirks which ensured all were sold to a flying trade from start to finish. A run of Blonde bullocks from B&HM Wilson, Selside set the stirk ring a light with a six month old selling to £1020. Limousin heifers sold to £890 from S Whitehead, Middleton with others from the same good home to £845. A keen interest was shown for all young bulls in the stirk ring with a Limousin selling to £895 from S Whitehead and British Blues out of dairy cows at six months sold to £725. Weaned stirks would be £30-£50 dearer on the fortnight with British Blues at five month old selling to £660 from Messrs Young, Lindale. A pen of British Blue bulls from R Greenwood, Skipton sold to £600. More stirks are required at the ever-increasing fortnightly sale.

Store Cattle
All buyers found another gear as J36 store cattle hit new level, a classy yearling British Blue bullock from A Winder & Son, Ravensdale sold to a top of £1350, with others from the same good home selling to £1330. First time vendors T&SB Proctor, Great Musgrave left with a smile on their faces selling Limousin bullocks to £1335. Also, achieving over the £1300 mark K Forest, Westhoughton with their Blonde bullock selling to £1315. Native bullocks once again sold to a good trade with Aberdeen Angus selling to £1190 from K Forrest and £1185 from JK&A Bowness & Son, Whasset. Yearling Hereford bullocks sold to £1075 from A Winder & Son. The heifer trade continues to go from strength to strength with Limousins topping at £1325 from T&SB Proctor. Yearling Limousin sold to £1220 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. A run of well fleshed South Devon heifers from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite sold to £1270. Strong Aberdeen Angus heifers sold to £1200 and £1110 from MJ&JD Handley, Milnthorpe. Eight - twelve month old heifers would be the trade of the day, with some of these being £50 plus dearer than in previous sale. Grazing types sold to £950 for a Limousin from I&AJ armer, Burniside who sold Charolais heifers to £940. A pen full of eight month old Limousin heifers from JH Barker & Son, Haverthwaite sold to £920. A handful of bulls were forward, with many more being able to be sold to the vendors advantage. Limousins sold to £1040 on three occasions from RI Dixon, Low Newton.
Demand at J36 for all types of cattle remains strong, with new and loyal returning buyers attending the popular fortnightly sale. The next sale is on Thursday 3rd March, which includes the under 12 months suckled cattle show.

Cast / OTM Cattle

Once again, a strong trade was seen for all classes and types of cull cows at NWA J36, with an overall market average of 151p/kg for all sold. Today’s sale topped at 179.5p/kg for a British Blue cross from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell. Other beef cows sold to 167.50p/kg for a Beef Shorthorn from TM & D Dobson, Crossthwaite and Aberdeen Angus cross from RJ & J Gardner, Kendal. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were keenly competed for selling to 157.5p/kg for Holstein Friesian from JW&TE Sharp LTD, Lyth, with others at 149.50p/kg from R Cowin & Sons, Mansergh. Buyers keen to secure cows suitable for further finishing with these generally achieving 130p/kg to 145p/kg.
Top grossing cow today was a Holstein Friesian from JW&TE Sharp LTD, Lyth achieving £1248, closely followed by MW&M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell selling a British Blue cross at £1197.
OTM Steers sold to a top price of 231p/kg and £1391 for British Blue cross from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton. Several OTM dairy heifers forward selling to 141p/kg for a Dairy Shorthorn from Messrs Robinson, Kendal.
A large entry of cows are required for Thursday 3rd March to meet buyers demands.
