J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Weekly Sale of Prime Lambs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 16th August 2022.

Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of prime lambs at J36 had an increasing entry of 1463 forward selling to an overall market average of 245p/kg. Well fleshed prime lambs continue to be in big demand and regularly selling in excess of 250p/kg with smaller leaner types possibly worth more in the store market. Heavy weights continued to be eagerly sought after at J36, with numerous buyers for this specification of lamb. Heavy weights peaked at £149 at 57kg with Charollais from M Moorhouse, Grange over Sands who sold 55kg Texels to £142. This was followed by other Texels to £138 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston. With other heavy weight Texels to £137 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands. Suffolk lambs peaked at £141 from WP Brewer & Sons, Bleasdale. This is followed by other Suffolks to £132 from DC, D & J Taylor, Kendal. Plenty of pens of heavy weight lambs regularly selling round the £130 mark. Beltex lambs peaked at £131 from WS Burrow & Sons, Silverdale. Beltex lambs peaked at 295p/kg from John Twigge, Lindale. With plenty of pens of tidy confirmation lambs selling in the region of 270p/kg. More hill lambs beginning to come forward. Cheviot mules peak at £117.50 at 47kg from J&M Wilson, Selside, who sold mules to £110.

Cast Sheep

The weekly sale of cast sheep at J36 boasted in entry in excess of 550. As seen at many markets nation-wide, trade is slightly easier than the dizzy heights that we have enjoyed throughout the summer. Leading the way was Texel ewes from CG Taylor, Kendal selling to £146 with other Texel ewes to £138 from Barlow Brothers, Crosston. Heavy weights Mule ewes peaked at £137 from KE Richards & Son, Howgill. With other mules to £129 from TE & A Galbraith, Crooklands. Plenty of pens of Mules ewes sold in the late hundred and teens. Best Swaledale ewes sold to £95 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme. With pens of well fleshed horned ewes selling in the £70’s and early £80’s.
