PRIME LAMBS

There was a much improved market average of 246p/kg at J36 this week, with 11 buyers present purchasing on 29 accounts ensuring all specifications of lambs were eagerly bid for. All lambs forward today sold to an overall market average of £112.15.
Heavy weight Suffolk lambs led the way selling to a top of £149 from TA&J Dixon, Selside, followed by other Suffolk lambs selling to £145 from R&EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Heavy weight Texel lambs sold to £142.50 and £141 from F&SA Edmondson, Ulverston. Other leading prices for Texels being £139 from TMW&H Hodgson, Ulverston, Followed by £138 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. With Plenty of heavy weight lambs regularly selling in the £130’s. The introduction of a returning buyer today saw Beltex lambs sell to £140 from John Twigge, Lindale with Beltex lambs peaking at 335p/kg or £134 from JG&PH Thompson, Selside. Also achieving the 300p/kg mark with Beltex lambs was P&TL Edmondson, Kirkby in Furness. Plenty of pens of better-bred Continental lambs regularly selling between 260 and 280p/kg. Handy weighted Continental lambs between 40-45kg were a much-improved trade this week, regularly selling around 250p/kg and more.
A large entry of upland lambs this week saw 52kg Mules sell to £118.50 from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack, with 46kg Mules selling to £111.50 from TA&J Dixon, Selside. All Mules forward averaging £105.50. Cheviot lambs peaked at £114 for 44kg lambs from HR&KA Hodgson, Barbon. More Horned lambs are now coming on to the market, which saw 43kg Swaledales sell to £90.50 from RF&CE Hodgson, Ulverston, followed by Rough Fells to £90 from BJ Bainbridge, Shap and £88 from P&S Hoggarth, Sedbergh.
More lambs required next week, with companies now requesting lambs to be belly clipped, for which we have facilities on site.

CAST SHEEP

A small entry of 420 ewes were forward, with all classes being a sharper trade on the week with new buyers round the ring. Charollais ewes topped the trade from JA&R Geldard & Sons, Levens selling to £149. Texels sold to £133 from D&S Robinson, Old Hutton. Zwartbles sold to £130 from GR Geldard, Levens. Heavy weight Continental ewes regularly selling between the £120 - £125 mark. Mule ewes sold to £100 twice from TA Teasdale, Newton in Cartmel and L Butcher, Millom. The best Mules regularly sold into the nineties and medium types into the eighties. There was much-improved trade for all types of hill ewes. Cheviots sold to £99 from Stockdale Farms, Rough Fells sold to £98 from S&W Dickinson, Tebay with others to £95 from Fishwick Bros, Longsleddale. Swaledale ewes were in keen demand from all buyers, with a top of £70 from MW&EM Mason & Son, Middleton with others to £68 from J&M Wilson, Selside. Medium type Swaledales sold to the £45-50 mark.
More tups were on offer today with Suffolks selling to £136 from H Newton, Levens and Roughs to £109 from S&W Dickinson, Tebay. Buyers were showing great interest for all types of cast rams at Junction 36.
