CALVES
60 calves were forward today with all continuing to sell to a strong trade at J36. A consignment of Blue bulls from WH Kitching & Son, Helsington topped at £440 with other Blue bulls to £430 from B Mallinson, Levens and £420 from RJ & KR Wilkinson, Levens. All Blue bulls forward averaged £370.
Heifers were keenly bid for at today’s sale with Blue heifers selling to £425 from W B Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness with others selling to £395 from B Mallinson & Son, Levens. Limousins peaked at £325 from WH Kitching & Son with many continental bull calves selling £320 - £380 with heifers selling either side of £300.
Native calves once again sold to a good demand with Hereford bulls selling to £410 from CM & CF Chapelhow, Penrith with Angus bulls selling to £330 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick and weaned Shorthorn heifers selling to £450 from JAH Walton & Son, Kirkby Stephen.
Weaned black and whites were keenly bid for, topping at £220 from Messrs Sowerby, Drybeck with others to £175 from CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith with many of the best rearing types selling between £100 – £120. Many more calves are needed at J36 to fulfil buyers demands.
STIRKS & WEANLINGS
Once again at J36 these sold to a flyer with Hereford bulls topping at £760 from RJ & J Gardner, Kendal with British Blue bulls selling to £720 from SM & CM Bewley, Dent. With many well reared stirks selling at £600 plus and weaned Angus bull stirks selling to £510 from D Wightman, Heversham.
STORES
The fortnightly sale of store cattle saw 150 go through the ring and saw a sharp trade for all types as customers are now looking to purchase summering cattle.
Taking the top spot was shared by P & SA Edmondson, Barrows Green who sold Charolais bullocks and Messrs Hodgson, Rydal selling Limousin bullocks to £1290. It was a good day all round for P & SA Edmondson who sold Limousin heifers to £1250 and also sold Charolais heifers to £1240. Strong cattle were once again a good trade at J36 with many selling over the £1200 mark.
Young grazing cattle would be the trade of the day with Limousin bullocks at 8 months old selling to £990 from A Winder & Son, Ravenstonedale, also achieving this price with Charolais bullocks at 10 months old were M & C Booth, Kentmere. The run of suckler bullocks from B & HM Wilson, Selside topped at £900.
There was a young show of suckler heifers forward with Limousins selling to £890 from A Winder & Son with Charolais topping at £860 from M & C Booth. Many good grazing type heifers were selling between the £800 – £850 mark.
JE Wightman, Lupton sold a run of Montbeliarde bullocks at 16 months old peaking at £890. The next sale of Store cattle is on Thursday 1st April. With vendors encouraged to show cattle with confidence with the continued strong trade for all types.
OTM CATTLE
There was a competitive ringside of buyers around the cull cow ring today, saw all cows sell to a market average of 130.9p/kg with keen interest in cows for further finishing.
Beef cows sold to a top price of 161.5p/kg on two occasions for Limousin x cows from PR Escolme, Endmoor and JR Corlett & Son, Cockermouth. Other well fleshed beef cows regularly selling at 145 – 160p/kg with younger cows for further finishing at 135 – 145p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 151.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from MH & AR Robinson, Old Hutton with other heavy dairy cows selling to 144.5p/kg from CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith and Messrs Halpin, Barrow in Furness. Medium type dairy cows were regularly 125 – 135p/kg with leaner parlour type cows generally 105 – 115p/kg depending upon type and quality.
Top grossing cow was a British Blue x from GM Redmayne, Ings achieving £1174, closely followed by the top grossing diary cow from CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith achieving £1148.
OTM heifers sold to a top price of 198.5p/kg for a British Blue x from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with diary heifers selling to 174.5p/kg from R Morris-Eyton & Son, Millom. Top grossing OTM heifer was a Holstein Friesian from R Morris-Eyton grossing £1181.
OTM Steers sold to a top price of 214p/kg and £1169 for British Blue x from JW Robinson, Farleton who sold others at 199.5p/kg and £1128.
