J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Beef Breeding & Store Cattle Sale, Thursday 4th March 2021

Calves

A sale of 100 calves with all types continuing to sell to a flying trade at J36. British Blue bulls topped at £405 from B Mallinson & Son, Witherslack with other British Blue bulls from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg selling to £395. CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith sold a run of Limousin bull calves topping at £390. There was a young show of native bred bulls forward with Aberdeen Angus selling to £280 twice from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand and HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick, with Herefords selling to £265 from Bambers Farm, Lancaster.

The best heifer calves were a strong trade with Aberdeen Angus selling to £400 from JAH Walton & Son, Kirkby Stephen and other Aberdeen Angus selling to £360 CS & CM Chapplehow. DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg showed a strong run of British Blue heifers topping at £385. Young Continental bred calves regularly sold in the £250 – £280 mark.

A small show of black and whites were forward with new buyers looking for strong, well reared black and whites. JA H Walton & son, Kirkby Stephen topped at £100 with 4 week old bulls from TW & CA Long selling to £62.

Stirks

Stirks saw a top price of £770 for Charolais x steers from J Lancaster, Ulverston with British Blue x steers from G & ID Postlethwaite selling at £740 and £730.

Other well grown steers - 6 – 9 months old - nicely selling at £700 - £730 to include Montbeliardes from A Prickett, Farleton selling at £720. Native steers sold to £710 for Aberdeen Angus x from J Lancaster and £690 for Hereford x from D & DW Prickett, Farleton.

Heifer stirks saw a top price of £700 for a Charolais x from DW & D Prickett who also sold Limousin x at £690 and British Blue x from MJ Whitworth sold at £680.

Several bull stirks were forward, selling to £780 for Aberdeen Angus x from JA Airey with others, 4 – 6 months old selling at £550 - £650.

OTMs

There was another strong trade for all classes of cull cows forward at today’s sale which saw a top price of 184.5p/kg for a Limousin cow from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness with other heavy, well fleshed beef cows, selling to 174.5p/kg for Aberdeen Angus x from JM Simpson, Underbarrow, 169.5p/kg for a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside and other Aberdeen Angus cows at 164.5p/kg from RG Robinson, Farleton.

There was keen interest for beef cows suitable for further finishing, generally selling at 140p/kg – 160p/kg. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 149.5p/kg for a Friesian from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with Holstein Friesians selling to 129.5p/kg from JM Barton & son, Lupton and JA & DE Batty & Sons, Burneside. Top grossing beef cow today was a Stabiliser achieving £1318 with numerous other beef cows achieving over £1100, with a top priced dairy being a Friesian from MW & M Hodgson achieving £1167.

OTM Heifers

OTM Heifers sold to a top of 194.5p/kg and £1347 for a Stabiliser from A Dixon & Son, Selside with dairy heifers selling to 169.5p/kg and £904 for a Holstein Friesian from JM Barton & Son, Lupton.

Cull bulls sold to 134.5p/kg and £1280 for a Blonde Aquataine from CR Alderson & Son.

Beef Breeding Cattle

The first beef breeding sale of the season saw a fast trade for all cattle on offer with buyers keen to secure replacement and additional stock.

Cows with calves at foot sold to £2050 from Messrs Fell, Barrow in Furness for a British Blue x cow with a Limousin bull calf at foot and back in-calf to a Bazadaise bull, with others from the same home selling to £1950 and £1900 with heifer calves at foot.

A British Blue x cow with Limousin x steer calf from D Clarke, Underbarrow sold to £1700 with others at £1600. In-calf cows sold to £1550 for a consignment from E Tuer, Windermere who sold others at £1500, £1350 and £1300.

A 5.5 year old Limousin bull achieved £1500.
