J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 1st September

Prime Lambs

There was a bumper entry of 1547 lambs forward with all lambs eagerly bid for with an overall market average of 209p/kg. This morning was the ‘Belting Beltex’ show in conjunction with the Northern Beltex Society. Thanks go to our Judge Mr Mark Jennings, after much deliberating he awarded 1st prize to Miss Abigail Winn, Burneside. These later sold for £110 or 275p/kg.

Heavy weight lambs continue to be in strong demand at J36 with numerous lambs selling over the £120 mark. The market topped at £129 from A Holden, Carnforth for Texels with Suffolks selling to £126 from R & EA Gardner, Brigsteer. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £124 from John Twigge, Grange over Sands with others from the same home selling to £118. Well-meated Continental lambs weighing 45-48kg sold at £100 plus with this section topping at £117 for Texels from Richards & Milburn, Kirkby in Furness.

Light weight lambs continue to be a strong trade with a pen of 34kg Texel lambs selling to £71 or 226p/kg from Messrs Young, Lindale

There was a bigger show of Mule lambs on offer today, this section topped at £105 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with a pen of 42kg Mule wethers from WJ & I France & Son, Chipping selling to £94.50.

There were more horned lambs on offer today with these all being eagerly bid for, topping at £86 for Dalesbred from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.

Cast Ewes

There were 591 ewes on offer today with all ewes selling to a stronger trade than previous weeks. Heavy ewes were regularly selling in the £100 mark with a top of £119 for a Teeswater ewe from Gibson & Berry, Endmoor. Texel ewes sold to £115 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe Mule ewes were a much strong trade today with a top of £89 from SW Atkinson & Son, Crook with others to £84 from TH Garnett & Son, Stank. Medium type Mule ewes sold into the seventy-pound mark.

There was a bigger show of hill ewes forward with Cheviot ewes selling to £77 from J Twigge with others to £74 from Carradice & Whitwell, Kendal. Swaledale ewes topped at £56 from Forest Hall Farms Partnership, Selside. Rough Fell ewes topped at £52 from WJ Dawson, Sedbergh.
