J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Cattle Sale - Thursday 26th November 2020

Calves & Weanlings

90 Calves and Weanlings forward today selling to a continued good trade with another young show of calves. Best calves continue to be very well bid for and selling to a fast trade. Middle beef calves continue to sell to a strong trade. Good black and white calves were in short supply. The consignment of Simmental Bull calves from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington led the way today at £425. British Blue bulls again well bid for, with all British Blue bulls averaging £348. This section topped at £410 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg with others from the same good home selling to £385. J Hornby & Son, Stank had a wonderful run of Blue bulls sold to £385. A small show of native bulls forward. Longhorn bulls peaked at £260 from The Inman Family, Witherslack with Hereford bulls selling to £255 again from J Hornby & Son. Messrs Pickthall, New Hutton, keeps bringing the goods to J36 calf sale, their run of British Blue heifers peaked at £380 with others to £365. RF & CE Hodgson Simmental heifers were all well bid for with a top of £330, others from the same home selling to £315. A small show of black and white calves forward, with many more needed to fulfil buyers orders. Topping the sale was a wonderful Friesian from Lawkland Hall selling to £255.

All weanlings were keenly bid for, Shuttleworth & Brown sold Hereford bulls to £585 with Limousin's from the same home selling to £550. MG & WD Burton sold British Blue heifers to £555. The run from Messrs Young, Lindale sold to £505 for blue heifers at just 4 months of age.

Beef Breeding Cattle

Beef Breeding Cattle today sold to a top price of £1500 for a 5-year-old Limousin x Cow with a 3-month Aberdeen Angus x Bull Calf at foot from RJ&R Holden, Silecroft, who sold other cows with calves at £1290.

Cull & OTM Cattle

NWA J36 continues to attract large numbers of Cull Cows, which today sold to a sharper trade than recent weeks with several buyers actively looking for cattle suitable for further finishing.
The sale peaked at 147.5p/kg for a Charolais x Cow from P&SA Edmondson, Barrows Green, who sold other heavy Continental cows at 137.5p/kg and 134.5p/kg.
Beef cows suitable for further finishing regularly sold at 120p/kg-130p/kg.
Dairy bred cows sold to a top price of 119.5p/kg for Dairy Shorthorns from Messrs Robinson, Old Hutton, who sold others to 117.5p/kg and 114.5p/kg. Holstein Friesians sold to 109.5p/kg from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe and Swedish Red sold to 104.5p/kg from A&B Pickthall, Hincaster.
Top grossing cow today was £1160 for Charolais x Cow From P&SA Edmondson, Barrows Green with others selling over £1100 from JT Procter, Flookburgh.
OTM Heifers sold to a top price of 181.5p/kg and £1214 for a Charolais x from CI Briggs, Ambleside, with Dairy heifers selling to 159p/kg from CM&CS Chappelhow, Clifton and £1009 from TK Robinson, Old Hutton. A single Cull Bull from RG Robinson, Farleton sold at 127.5p/kg or £1032 for an Aberdeen Angus.

Store Cattle

All Store Cattle experienced a fierce trade with buyer’s keen to secure replacement stock to fill sheds and take advantage of the improved fat cattle trade. Store Bulls sold to a top price of £1170 for Luings from Low Moor Howe Farm, Winster who sold others at £940. Younger bulls sold to £740 for Charolais x from JE Stables & Sons, Grange over Sands.
Steers sold to a price of £1030 for a Limousin x from JE Stables & Sons who sold others at £1020 and £1000. Younger steers sold to £980 for Limousin x from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton with other steers regularly £940-£980.
Heifers sold to a price of £1070 for a Limousin x from CD Slinger & L Eaton, Middleton. A large entry of Native sired Heifers forward at todays sale selling to £850 for Aberdeen Angus x from JE Wightman, Lupton, who sold others to £800 and Hereford x at £790.
A consignment of Belted Galloway Heifers from MB Meredith, Coniston attracted keen interest for future breeding selling to £740, with others at £680.

Suckled Calves

The 3rd sale of Suckled Calves saw a large crowd of new and existing buyers in attendance, all keen for additional stock from this renowned sale.
Suckler steers old to £850 for a Limousin x from JG&RM Hall, Keld with other Limousin x steers selling to £830 from CD Slinger & L Eaton, Middleton and £800 from Messrs Hodgson, Windermere.
A consignment of Charolais x Steers from R&BJ Cleasby, Broughton in Furness sold to £810. Younger steers sold £770 for 5 month old Limousin x from B Heyes, St Helens who sold others at £750 and £710. Simmental x Steers from MG&WD Burton, Barnard Castle sold to £760.
Suckler Heifers sold to a price of £850 from JG&RM Hall, Keld with Simmental x selling to £770 from MG&WD Burton. Heifer calves predominately being younger at 4-6 months sold, selling to £660 from R&BJ Cleasby and £650 Limousin x B Heyes.
A feature of todays sale was a special section of native sired calves which attracted several specialist purchasers showing the demand and popularity for these cattle.
Beef Shorthorn x steers sold to £830 from J Black & Son, Kentmere. An entry of Sim Luing bullocks from Low Moor Howe Farm attracted keen interest selling to £800, with others at £790.
Hereford x Steers (5mo) sold to £640 from G&ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with other younger native steers generally £520-£600. Galloway and Blue Grey steers sold to £550 from JR Handley, Whinfell who sold others at £500.
Native sired heifers sold to £560 for a Blue Grey from JR Handley, with Hereford x heifers selling to £470 from RC&SC Cleasby, Broughton in Furness and Aberdeen Angus to £450 from PJ&HJ Onions, Carnforth.

Next sale for all classes of Beef Breeding, Store Cattle & Suckled Calves will be held on Thursday 10th December which will be the final sale of 2020.
