Calves and Weanlings

The weekly sale of calves had an entry of sixty forward this week. The entries forward were a lot younger than what has been seen of late. Once again at Lancaster there was plenty of demand for all types of calves with many buyers leaving empty handed. Leading the way was the consignment of British Blue bulls from JP & C Robson, Garstang selling to £405, £395 and £385; plenty of good beef bulls selling in excess of £300. Beef heifer calves sold to £310 for a British Blue from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth; plenty of beef heifers selling in the three-hundred-pound region.
The demand for Black and White bull calves at Lancaster continues to increase, this week they sold to a top of £165 from WG Farms, Cockerham.

Monthly Sale of Stirks

Lancaster’s monthly sale of stirks had 120 forward with a large variety on offer. Stirks that are well grown continue to be in big demand and more required to fulfil our buyer’s requirements. Steers sold to a top of £850 for an Angus from JK & B Birkett, Morecambe who also sold Flekvieh bullocks to £790. Other leading prices saw an 11-month-old British Blue bull selling to £850 from O & H Melling, Kirkham. The heifer trade topped at £740 for a Limousin from JE Harrison, Greenhalgh. Well grown beef sired (eight months to yearlings) stirks often sold in the region of seven hundred. A larger number of dairy bullocks forward saw yearling black and white bullocks selling to £600 from G Rawlinson, Astley Moss.

Store Cattle

Lancaster’s weekly sale of store cattle enjoyed a brisk trade, which continues to look strong for beef in the near future. Leading the way was the consignment from H Chapman and Son, Middleton selling Charolais steers to £1370, others sold to £1360 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Other continental bullocks saw British Blue steers selling to £1340 from D & N Davis, Nateby. Native bullocks saw Hereford’s top at £1370 from SJ Brass, Ingleton with Angus Bullocks from the same home selling to £1330 and others to £1300 from J & M Cockett, Ingleton. A lot of strong steers easily selling in excess of the £1200 mark.
Heifers this week sold to a top of £1350 from R Capstick and Son, Ingleton with a British Blue who also sold Limousins to £1260. Other British Blue heifers sold to £1330 from K & DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Best heifers today sold mid eleven hundreds and upwards.
Dairy steers sold to a top of £1300 for Montbeliardes from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe. Black and White bullocks this week sold to a top of £1060 from WR Clarke, Pilling.
All store cattle forward today averaged £1,048.

Cast Cows and OTM Cattle

A slightly reduced number of cast cows with 114 forward at Lancaster this week selling to an overall market average 121p/kg. Leading the way was OTM Limousin heifers from T Allen & Co, Middleton selling to 209.5p/kg or £1401.56. Young Limousin cows selling to 204.5p/kg from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man. Cast steers twice sold to a top of 189.5p/kg twice, firstly for stabilisers from AE & PC Capstick, Heversham and British Blues to the same price from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale grossing £1174. Young British Blue cows sold to 189.5p/kg from GR & A Foy, Conder Green. Black and White heifers sold to £1093 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham.
Best dairy cows sold in excess of the thousand mark this week peaking at £1108 from C & AJ Woodhouse, Millom followed by £1084 from J Bargh and Son, Morecambe. Dairy cows saw the best sell between 124-130p/kg with real good meated cows selling beyond this.
