Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 22nd May

Store Cattle

Flying Friday at Lancaster with stores peaking at £1290.

There was another good entry forward with the trade noticeably sharper with buyer’s keen to purchase with prime cattle prices rumoured to lift. It was the consignment from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland that topped the market selling Limousin and Charolais bullocks to £1290 with other Limousin bullocks selling to £1270. Angus bullocks topped at £1270 from GE Turner, Inglewhite this was closely followed by Limousins to £1250 from R & A Easterby, West House. Luing bullocks sold to £1240 from JC Dunning, Orton. British Blue bullocks topped at £1240 from R Escolme, Bay Horse with heifers from the same home selling to £1230. 15% of the cattle forward this week sold for £1200 or more. Black and white bullocks sold to a top of £1180 from JM & AG Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

There continues to be plenty of demand for all types of cattle with a bit of rain helping to freshen things up, seeing grazing cattle continue to be wanted. All cattle forward today averaged £1037.

Cast Cows

There was an increased entry of 121 forward selling to a flying trade with a very impressive market average 135p/kg.

It was Limousin cast cows that topped the market selling to 199.5p/kg twice from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man. This was closely followed by Angus steers selling to 197.5p/kg from the same home. OTM Limousin heifers topped at 189.5p/kg twice from WK & R Harrison, Docker. There was plenty of beef cows selling between 155p/kg and 170p/kg with better ones exceeding that. Beef cows sold to a top price of £1195 for Limousins from RW & FJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore. Plenty of other good beef cows sold in excess of the £1100 mark. Black and white heifers sold to a top of 154.5p/kg or £1112 from R & K Jenkinson, Pilling. Other OTM heifers well-fleshed OTM heifers selling around the 150p/kg.

Best black and white cows sold to a top of 144.5p/kg numerous times peaking at £1099 from L Burrow & Sons, Lower Tatham with others selling to £1054 from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell.

A few cast bulls forward this week saw young Simmental bulls sell to 179.5p/kg or £1382 from Barlow Bros, Croston. Bulls in the cow ring topped at £1392 for Beef Shorthorns from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with Angus bulls selling to £1380 from GB & EA Metcalfe, Kirkby Lonsdale.

Nineteen cattle in the cast cow ring sold in excess of £1000. OTM and Cast Cows continue to be required at Lancaster.

Calves & Stirks

The weekly sale of calves had an entry of 50 forward meeting plenty of demand and were well sold, once again. The market topped at £400 for British Blue heifer calves from WG Farms, Cockerham. British Blue bull calves twice topped at £355 from T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping and Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Angus bull calves peaked at £355 from J & G Thornley, Kirkham. This was closely followed by British Blue calves from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne selling heifers to £345 and bulls to £340. The consignment of Hereford calves from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green saw heifers sell to £340 and £295 and bulls from this farm sell to £310. There is plenty of demand for beef calves with more required each week.

Black and white bull calves topped at £115 and £105 from WN & D Smith & Son, Cockerham with Drinkall Bros twice selling black and white bull calves to £110.
