J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 21st July

Spring Lambs

The weekly sale of spring lambs at J36 had a reduced entry of 1524 selling to an overall market average 208p/kg. Lambs that were well-finished and within specification in strongest demand with trade for heavy lambs was slightly easier but still regularly selling in excess of the £100 mark. Light weight lamb trade varied depending upon the quality and finish of the lambs.

Ben Harrison, Staveley topped the market today selling to £125 with heavy weight Charolais lambs. Texel lambs sold to £113 from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth followed by £112 from E & H Winder, Kirkby Stephen. Other noted Texel lamb prices were £109 from J Handley & Son, Chapel-Le-Dale, £108.50 from DM & D Cook, Ulverston and £107 from JC Dunning, Orton. Suffolk lambs sold to a top of £110 from Ben Harrison with other Suffolk lambs selling to £107 from T Smith, Ulverston and £103.50 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Plenty more pens of lambs sold in excess of the £100 mark.

Beltex lambs sold to £100 from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor closely followed by £99.50 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme. Beltex lambs sold to 251p/kg from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth. Mule lambs twice sold to £80 weighing 40kg from ST & SE Allen, Tebay and JS & S Atkinson, Scorton.

Prime Hoggs

The was an increased entry of over 150 hoggs forward that sold to a mixed trade dependent upon the quality. Well-fleshed hoggs were good to sell meeting plenty of demand with buyers very selective over leaner types. Texel hoggs sold to a top of £95 from AJ & SE Burrow, Milnthorpe with Suffolk hoggs topping at £89. Hoggs with proper finish that could be used for the upcoming festival regularly selling in the seventies.

Cast Ewes

There was a bumper entry of 834 Cast Ewes forward, as vendor take advantage of the strong trade and the upcoming festival. Topping the sale were Texel Ewes selling to £104 from LE & A Ridding, Selside. Pure bred and strong Texel Ewes sold between £94 and £102. Beltex Ewes sold to £98 from AE Atkinson & Sons, Endmoor. A pen of strong Cheviot Mule ewes peaked at £96 from D Metcalfe, Dalton In Furness.

Mule Ewes regularly sold in excess of the £80 mark topping at £86 from D & C Middleton, Burrow. A bigger show of hill ewes were forward with all selling to a nice trade. Cheviot Ewes topped at £77 from Forest Hall Farm with Swaledale Ewes peaking at £64 for strong ewes from RS & BA Harker, Holme and others to £61 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Medium type Swaledale ewes sold into the £30’s.

All Cast Rams were in strong demand for the upcoming festival. Texel Rams topped at £128 from B & JM Crowe, Witherslack. Beltex rams sold to £99 from DR Harrison, Selside.
