Store Hoggs
The fortnightly sale of Store Hoggs had an increased entry this week of 1181. Typical for the time of year, there was a variety of types of hoggs forward with a strong trade throughout with buyers eager to purchase all types. Leading the way was Continental hoggs from PG Thornton, Scorton selling to £91 with others selling to £88 from JR Handley, Whinfell. Texel hoggs peaked at £86 from W & J Penny, Kirkby in Furness, £85.50 from Messrs Wilson, Grange-over-Sands and £85 from WR Clarke & Partners, Yealand Redmayne, RA Gibbons, Flookburgh and B Clark, Grange-over-Sands. There were numerous more pens selling strong short keep Continentals easily selling into the early eighties. Suffolks peaked at £79 from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton with others to £78.50 from A & B Pickthall, Milnthorpe. Beltex hoggs peaked at £77 from BJ Bowness, Kendal. Mid keep Continental and Suffolk hoggs regularly sold in excess of £70.
Hill bred hoggs saw Rough Fells sell to £76.50 from Messrs FB Dunning & Son, Orton. Cheviots sold to £75.50 from JE Swan, Grange-over-Sands. Mule hoggs sold to £70.50 from TW Gorst, Crook. Plenty of other pens sold in the late sixties. Long term and smaller hoggs regularly selling between £45 and £55.
