Pigs

Pigs sell to £185 and 142p/kg at NWA J36

North West Auctions held its opening sale of pigs on Tuesday 14th January which saw an entry of 120 forward in all sale sections. 69 Prime pigs sold to £128 for Pietrain x Saddleback hoggs from PK & R Woof, Stainton with Duroc x gilts from DC Morley, Aberdeen achieving £122. Large White x gilts from NJ Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness sold at £104 with boars achieving £100 from MB Fawcett, Carnforth. Lightweight pigs were in high demand selling to £100 from PK & R Woof, Stainton.

Well finished pigs generally 98p/kg to 110p/kg, depending on weight and breed with gilts and hoggs achieving a premium ahead of boars. Top today being 142p/kg from PR & R Woof. Cull sows sold to £142 ad 53p/kg from M Bennett, Penrith with a monster 430kg Hampshire boar from TJ Atkinson selling at £185.

Weaners sold to a sharper trade than previous sales topping at £45 for Pietrain x from D Lord, Preesall with others at £43 for Large White x from AJ & EJ Platt, Barrow in Furness. Younger weaners were £18 - £25 depending on breed and quality.

The next sale of pigs is Tuesday 28th January for Prime and Cull pigs.

Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had an entry of 1175 forward which saw well-finished hoggs in strong demand with lean types very hard to place. Well-finished heavy weights continue to be in strong demand as well as good conformation hoggs with light-weight well-finished hoggs eagerly bid for. There was an overall market average of 200p/kg and an SQQ of 201p/kg. Heavy Continental hoggs sold to a top of £124 with Suffolk hoggs selling to £120 from GB Holt, Rossendale. Other heavy weight Suffolks sold to £112.50 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. Texels sold to a top of £112.50 from B & D Willison & Son, Levens closely followed by JB Airey, Kendal selling to £111.50. Plenty more pens of heavy weight hoggs sold in the early hundreds.

Beltex hoggs sold to 224p/kg, 222p/kg and 220p/kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside with other Beltex selling to 221p/kg from JE Wightman, Lupton. Plenty of pens od good conformation hoggs sold between 215p/kg and 220p/kg. Mule hoggs sold to a top of £98.50 from WI & A Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with Cheviots peaking at £94 from M & C Booth, Kentmere and £93.50 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge. There was plenty more pens of Mules selling in the early nineties.

Cast Ewes

There was an increased entry of 876 Cast Sheep forward selling to a strong trade, once again, with a busy ring of active buyers where more could have been sold to the advantage of the vendor. Texel ewes peaked at £128 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Lambrigg with Suffolk ewes selling to £116, twice, from B Nichols, Southam and TA Teasdale, Newton-in-Cartmel. Charollais ewes sold to the same price from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Leicester ewes topped at £113 from JS & S Atkinson, Scorton. Plenty of pens of heavy weight and Continental ewes selling between £100 and £112. Mule ewes peaked at £108 from P & SA Edmondson, Stainton with Cheviot x ewes topping at £107 from DR Harrison, Selside. Masham ewes sold to a peak of £101 from GCL Stephenson, Kirkby Lonsdale. Plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes sold in the early nineties. Horned ewes saw Rough Fells peak at £77 from EJ Hodgson & Son with Swaledales selling to £76 from Thrimby Farms, Penrith. Plenty of pens of strong horned ewes sold around the £70 mark. Herdwick ewes sold to £68 and £67 from DJ Clarke, Underbarrow.

Lean ewes continue to be a very strong trade and were eagerly bid for today.
