J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Store Cattle, Thursday 9th January

Champion Sells to £1370

The opening sale of store cattle for 2020 saw a full crowd of eager buyers in attendance all keen to secure stock. Buyers were in attendance from throughout the Northern Counties, Midlands, Wales & Scotland.

A feature of today’s sale was the pre-sale show which was kindly and ably judged by Mr Andrew Dyson, Ripon who had an outstanding entry of cattle presented before him in the two show classes.

The Championship rosette was awarded to an 18 month old British Blue x steer from MJ & JA Winn, Burneside which was also the recipient of the Janet Gorst Perpetual Challenge Trophy. This steer later sold for the day’s top price of £1370. The Reserve Champion was a Limousin x heifer again from MJ & JA Winn, which sold for £1190.

A fast trade was experienced throughout the sale with all classes and types of cattle keenly competed for. Well grown steers were regularly £1100 - £1250 with yearlings £850 - £1050 for all breeds. Heifers sold to £1220 with the stronger end generally £900 - £1120 and yearlings £840 - £920.

Younger cattle 6 – 9 months old were easily sold with steers generally £700 - £900 and heifers £650 - £800. All steers averaged £905 and heifers £850.

Several young bulls were forward selling to £1090 for Blond d’Aquitaine from MJ Whitworth with younger sorts to £800 from R Keith and HM Hodgson selling Limousin x and Simental x.

The next sale of store cattle is Thursday 23rd January, vendors are encouraged to enter cattle with confidence.

OTMs

The opening sale of cull cows and OTM clean cattle saw an entry of 49 forward and selling to a fast trade with all classes and types in demand.

Well fleshed beef bred cows sold to 159p/kg for a Stabiliser x cow from A Dixon & Son, Selside with others regularly 135p/kg – 150p/kg. Beef cows for further feeding found keen bidding selling to 131p/kg from E Dodgson, Kendal with others 110p/kg – 125p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was the Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son achieving £1129.

Dairy cows sold to 119p/kg from RL & J Crowe, Rusland with others at 117p/kg from C Preston, Whicham. Medium cows 95p/kg – 110p/kg with parlour cows 80p/kg – 90p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was £907 from C Preston with others £887 from JM Barton & Son, Lupton.

Cull bulls sold to 99p/kg and £914 for Hereford and Blond d’Aquitaine from R Keith, Grange over Sands.

OTM heifers sold to 169p/kg (£940) for Limousin x from RG & L Holmes, Warton with dairy heifers to 127p/kg (£722) for Holstein Friesians from RG & J Clarke, Gatebeck.

OTM steers sold to 184p/kg (£1346) for Limousin x from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmel Fell with Charolais x 175p/kg (£1179 from RG & L Holmes, Warton.

A market average of 114p/kg was achieved for all sold.

Another good entry is required at the next sale to meet buyers demands.
Rearing Calves and Stirks (133)

Rearing Calves

A decent entry of rearing calves were on offer today with 50% of the entry being black and whites.
Trade for well presented calves was extremely fast, however younger calves were harder to place.

Leading the way today was a super strong British Blue bull (1m 28 days) from Messrs HJ Robinson & Son, Crooklands which made £430. A tremendous pen from Messrs CM & CS Chapplehow, Penrith who sold a Charolais heifer (2m & 13 days) to £400, Limousin bulls (2m & 30 days) to £390 and Limousin Heifer (2m & 27 days) to £330. Messrs RF & CE Hodgson, Ulverston sold British Blues (1m & 7 days) to £270, Messrs HJ Robinson & Son sold Aberdeen Angus bulls to £245 and £230 and Messrs DR & C Galbraith sold Blue heifers to £300. Messrs HJ Robinson also sold Blue heifers to £270. Angus heifer claves from Messrs WB Winder & Co, Broughton sold to £200.

Stirks

A small entry of stirks met a flying demand. Leading the way was Messrs Kirkby & Longworth, Dunnerdale who sold Limousin 8 month old steers to £720 and Blue 9 month olds to £715 and 8 month old Limousin heifers to £620. Angus heifers, 9 months old from the same home made £570. Hereford bulls 6 months old from Messrs RJ & J Gardner, Kendal sold to £650.
