Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs at J36 had an increased entry of 1103 forward, selling to another strong trade with an overall Market average of 227p/kg and handy weighted hoggs averaging 233p/kg. The average would be strong considering the type of hoggs on offer. Better quality confirmation Continental hoggs sold in excess of the 250p/kg mark. Topping the market at 297p/kg or £119 was Beltex hoggs from J Twigge, Lindale, with others to 285p/kg or £114. The consignment from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside sold to 295p/kg or £121 with others 281p/kg or £118 for Beltexs. Heavy weight hoggs saw better quality ones selling in excess of the £130 mark peaking at £139 from A & L Birkett, Little Langdale for Continentals. This was closely followed by £138.50 from LA & M Lambert, Lupton also with Continentals. Texel hoggs peaked at £134 from MW & MR Black, Staveley with others to £132 from JB Airey, Kendal. Suffolks peaked at £130 from TW Nelson and Son, Stainton. Mule hoggs peaked at £118 weighing 52kg from NW & EM Mason and Son, Middleton in Lonsdale closely followed by £117 from LA & M Lambert, Lupton, with plenty more selling well over the hundred mark. Cheviot hoggs sold to £108.50 weighing 44kg from AR & BJ Thompson, Selside. Whitefaced Woodland hoggs peaked at £111 weighing 49kg from PJ & HJ Onions, Arkholme. Hill hoggs saw Herdwicks sell to £104 weighing 52kg from WL & F Richards, Kirkby in Furness. Horned hoggs saw Swaledales peak at £97 for 44kg hoggs from JF & AW Sutton, Longsleddale.

Cast Ewes

There was a slightly smaller entry of Cast Sheep this week which were met with an equally as strong a demand. It was a cast ram that jointly topped the market today with a Leicester from Fishwick Bros, Longsledddale and a Texel ewe from RG Blackburn, Penrith both achieving £139. Other sheep from the Blackburn consignment sold to £130 and £122. Charollais ewes peaked at £130 from FE & CM Robinson, Crooklands with Texel ewes twice selling to £120 from WJ & L Barker, Arkholme. Strong Continental ewes regularly sold around the £110 mark. Leicester ewes sold to a top of £111 from M Bateman & Son, Sedbergh.

Mule ewes sold to £109 from AJ & EJ Platt, Barrow-in-Furness. Other Mules sold to £106 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Plenty of pens of strong Mule ewes sold in the late nineties. Horned ewes saw Rough Fells sell to £88 from JA Higgs, Howgill with Herdwick shearlings to £87 from A & B Fell, Millom and Swaledales topping at £77 twice from Fishwick Bros and JH Pedley, Barbon. This was followed by Dalesbred Ewes selling to £76 from DC Miller, Claughton on Brock. Plenty of pens of well-fleshed horned ewes sold in sixties and early seventies.

A couple of goats forward today sold to £118 from H Stables, Underbarrow.
