Prime Lambs

The continued uncertainty of the latest spike in Covid and the on-going saga of Brexit meant many vendors were cautious of forwarding their lambs. This saw a reduced entry of 609 forward selling to a strong market average of 219p/kg with an SQQ average of 224p/kg. The market topped at £118 and £116 for heavy weight Texel lambs from JB Airey, Kendal closely followed by others selling to £113 from A Clark and Johnson, Windermere. All heavy weight lambs sold to a much-improved average of 209p/kg.
It was standard and light weights that met the most demand. Well fleshed and good conformation lambs often selling in excess of the 240p/kg mark, selling to a top of 265p/kg for Texel lambs from JA & KJ Allen, Ings. Beltex lambs from Thrimby Farms, Penrith sold to 260p/kg and 259p/kg with others selling to 258p/kg from R & E Ladds, Kendal. Plenty of pens sold around the 250p/kg mark. All Beltex lambs forward averaged 255p/kg with all Texel lambs forward averaging 226p/kg.
Upland lambs sold to a top of £107 for Cheviot lambs from DW Hodgson, Cartmell Fell. Mule lambs peaked at £98 from MW & M Hodgson, Cartmell Fell. All mules forward sold to a market average of 211p/kg. Horned lambs topped at £83 from Amy Harrison, Kentmere.

Cast Ewes

A bumper show of cast ewes forward with 596 going under the hammer, with trade remaining buoyant. Texel ewes lead the way with a top of £134 from AJ Ashwood, Morecambe, with other Texel ewes to £130 from WJ & LA Barker, Arkholme with many selling over the £105. Continentals topping at £125 from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake for Charollais ewes. Suffolk ewes sold to £114 from G & SA Edmondson, Holme, all Suffolk ewes averaging £94. A good show of mules forward with a top of £95 also from G & SA Edmondson and a pen full from P Stephenson selling to £92. Gibson & Berry, Endmoor sold a wonderful run of Masham ewes to a top of £98, with a pen of 24 from this good home selling to £90. Another big show of hill ewes forward; J Bargh & Son, Morecambe sold Swaledale ewes to £78 with Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale selling a ring full of Swaledale ewes to £77, all Swaledale ewes averaging £52. Wannops Farm Ltd, Morecambe sold a good run of Cheviot ewes to a top of £76. Cull ewes are required next week to fulfil buyers’ orders.
