Prime Pigs Sell to £148 at NWA J36
The fortnightly sale of pigs saw a top price of £148 paid for a superb trio of Pietrain x gilts from A Brown, Carnforth purchased by Browns Quality Meats, Lindale as a real treat for their customers. Other well-bred and well finished gilts and hogs selling at £110-£122.
Top p/kg was 121p/kg achieved for Pietrain x hogs from BR Harrison, Ings with others generally 100p/kg – 110p/kg.
Cull sows sold to £138 from W Stamper with others at 77p/kg. A single cull boar sold at £70.
A pen of Pietrain x weaners attracted keen interest selling to £47 from NJ Wilkinson, Barrow in Furness.
The next sale of all classes of pigs will be Tuesday 25th August.
Spring Lambs
The weekly sale of prime lambs had an entry of 1566 forward that saw a very mixed entry of lambs with meaty lambs selling away to a premium, but under-fleshed lambs were harder to place today. All lambs forward averaged 211p/kg. Leading the way today was Texel lambs from JE Nuttall, Kendal at 54kg selling to £126. Other Texel lambs at the same weight sold to £122 from JE Wightman, Lupton. 50kg plus lambs full of meat sold away between £110 and £118, with this section averaging 226p/kg. Beltex lambs from Abigail Winn, Burneside sold to £118 with the Beltex section averaging £95 for over 100 sold. Beltex peaked at 258p/kg from Thrimby Hall Farms, Penrith.
There was a bigger entry of Mule lambs today with all Mule lambs forward averaging 206p/kg and a top of £108 achieved for 52kg lambs from WH Kitching & Son, Helsington with others to £93 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdsale.
Light weight lambs continue to be a strong trade as long as they are full of meat with 37kg Texel lambs from JT Procter, Flookburgh selling to £88. Many lambs in that weight category sold £80 plus.
Cast Ewes
There was a bumper entry of 588 ewes with well-fleshed ewes continuing to sell to a strong trade, with cleaner types hard to place. The market topped at £107 for Beltex ewes from Abigail Winn, Burneside. Other Beltex ewes sold to £100 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. There was a run of Lleyn ewes from P Knowles, New Hutton sold to £82 for a pen of ten. Mule ewes were a lot less on the week with a top of £89 from I Edmondson, Ulverston with a full pen of ewes from RF & CE Hodgson, Pennington selling to £82. Medium Mule ewes sold in the earlier sixties. Cheviot Mules sold to £87 from GA Lambert, Gatebeck.
Once again, there was a bigger show of hill ewes with meaty sorts continuing to sell to a strong trade. Cheviot ewes sold to £76 from SM & CE Bewley, Dent. A strong pen of Swaledale ewes from Fishwick Bros, Long Sleddale topped this section at £61 with others to £60 from JA & CA Gibson, Selside. Medium type Swaledales, with meat, sold in the mid to late thirties.
