A New Market Record Achieved for the Third Time This Year.

The monthly catalogued beef breeding sale saw a new market record of £3300 achieved for a home bred 3rd calved Limousin x cow with a Limousin x heifer calf from local vendor DJ Clarke, Tullithwaite Hall who has been dispersing his herd throughout 2020. Other cows with calves from this dispersal sold at £2450, £2300 and £2000.

A consignment of British Blue x and Limousin x cows with Limousin x calves from G & ID Postlethwaite sold to £2100 with others at £1850 and £1750.

AT Rogerson sold a trio of 2nd calved British Blue x cows with Limousin x calves to £2000 and £1900.
Aberdeen Angus x cows with Limousin x calves from S Kellet & Sons sold to £1700 with a Hereford x heifer with Aberdeen Angus x calf from JH Woof selling at £1500.

The first part dispersal of Welsh Black cows with Charolais x calves from JR Park sold to £1600 with others at £1350.

A 7th calved Limousin cow with calf from WB Winder & Co sold at £1500.

Calves

There was a strong entry of 93 calve forward today which, again, sold to a fast trade showing NWA is the place to sell your calves. A British Blue bull topped the sale at £410 from M Gibson, Sedbergh. JW & TE Sharp, Lyth sold a 4-week-old bull to £400. All British Blue bulls forward today averaged £318. There was a superb run of stabiliser bull calves from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg selling to £385. Native bred calves were in strong demand, once again, with Angus bull calves peaking at £360 from AK & BM Robinson & Son, Arkholme with others selling to £335 from MJ & K Ayrton, Lancaster.

British Blue heifers peaked at £390 from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness. Native bred heifers were the trade of the day with Angus’ flying to £370 from AK & BM Robinson with others to £340 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick.

There was more Fleckvieh bulls on offer today with a top of £280 achieved from AK & BM Robinson with others to £255 from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness. Weaned black and whites sold to another strong trade with new buyers looking to purchase. A top price of £285 for a pen of 5 Friesians from Messrs Dennison, Scales. Good rearing type black and white calves sold in the £100 plus region with medium sorts selling between £70-£80. All black and whites forward averaged £125.

There was a show of 85 stirks sold to a full ringside of buyers. The stirk section topped at £790 for Charolais heifer from Kirkby & Longworth, Ulpha. MJ & K Ayrton, run of Angus steer stirks peaked at £670 this good home also sold Simmental heifers to £670. Friesians were once again the trade of the day with a top of £510 achieved from PD & PJ Mason, Burton in Kendal with a pen full MJ & K Ayrton selling to £500. GG & MA Long, Ulverston sold a run of weaned Hereford bullocks to £550.

Cast Cows

The cull cow sale at NWA J36 saw one of the largest entries seen at a summer sale with 69 selling to a fast trade with a market average of 135p/kg and over half the entry being dairy cows.

Beef cows sold to 189.5p/kg for a young Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son, Selside with a British Blue x achieving 174.5p/kg from PW Clarke, Crosthwaite and a Limousin x 169.5p/kg from TW Gorst, Crook. There was keen interest in cows for further finishing and generally 140p/kg – 155p/kg.

Dairy cows sold to 144.5p/kg from WB Winder & Co, Broughton in Furness with others 137.5p/kg for Norwegian Red x from R Cowin & Sons, Mansergh. Heavy and meated dairy cows generally 130-135p/kg with mediums 115p/kg - 125p/kg and parlour cows 95p/kg – 105p/kg depending on quality.

Top grossing cow was a Stabiliser x from A Dixon & Son achieving £1163 with a Charolais x from J Twigge, Lindale at £1130 and a Blonde x £1124 from TW & C Shepherd, Nook. A further 10 cows were over £1000 including a Holstein Friesian from WB Winder & Co at £1045. A Brown Swiss from DW Robinson & V Finch, Milnthorpe grossing at £924.

Cull bulls are starting to come forwards in greater numbers selling to 159p/kg and £1295 for a Charolais from J Twigge, Lindale with a Limousin from DW Hodgson, Cartmel Fell selling at 137.5p/kg and £1144. All bulls averaged 143p/kg and £1112.

OTM heifers sold to 149.5p/kg and £766 for a Montbeliarde from RJ Nicholson, Lupton with steers to 169.5p/kg and £1141 from JW Robinson & Son, Farleton.

Store Cattle

There was a bumper entry for the first sale in August selling to a fast and competitive trade.

Steers sold to £1250 and £1220 for well-bred Limousin x from A Winder & Son with Aberdeen Angus to £1190 from J Twigge and British Blue x £1160 from MJ Shepherd and Hereford x £1150 from J Twigge.

A nice entry of yearling steers at the sale sold to keen interest with a Limousin x from TW Gorst selling at £1070, Charolais x to £930 from FW Park and Limousin x £910 from S Kellet & Sons. An entry of Luing and Simluing steers from Low Moor Howe Farm sold to £900. Hereford steers sold to £850 from J & M Wilson. Younger steers sold to £850 for Limousin x from PW Clarke with a Charolais x from MJ Whitworth achieving £850, British Blue x from A Talbot sold at £810.

Dairy bred steers sold to £700 for Holstein Friesian from Messrs Ellwood who sold others at £660 with Fleckvieh selling to £620 from AR & BJ Thomspon.

Heifers sold to £1100 for 6 Aberdeen Angus x heifers from JW & HM Metcalfe & Son with British Blue x from S & M Cooper selling at £1070 and £1060 from MJ Waller. Limousin x heifers from TE & A Galbraith sold to £1040 and Hereford x £990 from TW Nelson & Son.

Yearling heifers sold to £890 for Charolais x from FW Park with other Charolais x at £860 from CI Briggs and Limousin x £860 from PW Clarke.

Younger heifers sold to £790 for Limousin x from KJ Knight and Charolais x from FW Park. Younger heifers generally £650 - £720.
