Prime Pigs
A full row of pigs forward at the dedicated prime pig sale were greeted by eager bidders keen to secure stock. All prime pigs today averaged 105p/kg with over half the entry being coloured boars. The sale topped at £135 for Large White x boars from W Stamper, Chipping with white gilts selling to £132 from Dumfries House, Cumnock. Other heavy pigs sold to £128 from M Bennett, Penrith and £118 from Dumfries House. Lighter weight pigs sold to £100 from D Baldwin, Ulverston and £92 G Taylor, Crook.
Top pence per kilo was achieved by M Bennett, Penrith selling Large White boars at 139p/kg with others to 138p/kg from W Stamper, Chipping. Other well-finished white pigs were generally 125p/kg to 135p/kg. Coloured boars sold to 110p/kg from B Capstick, Sedbergh.

Prime Lambs
North West Auctions held their weekly sale of Prime Lambs with an entry of 1100 forward selling to an overall market average of 158p/kg. Well-fleshed heavy lambs were, once again, in strong demand with leaner types harder to place and pulling back the market average. Topping the market today was heavyweight Suffolk lambs from T Parkin, Marthwaite selling to £88.50 with other Suffolks selling to £86.50 from JE Wightman, Lupton. Texel lambs sold to a top of £88 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton-with-Oxcliffe with other Texel lambs selling to £86 from JG & PH Thompson, Selside and £85 from RH, M & S Boyren, Ulverston. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £87 from B & R Barnes, Gilsmere Nook. Charollais lambs topped at £84.50 from AJ Robinson, Yealand Redmayne. Heavyweight Mules sold to a top of £80.50 from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland. Top pence per kilo today was achieved by Beltex lambs from JG & PH Thompson selling to 189p/kg followed by RJ Gunn, Milnthorpe to 185p/kg and 184p/kg from JA & DE Batty & Sons, Burneside. Plenty more pens of better conformation and well-fleshed lambs sold around the 180p/kg mark. Mule lambs regularly sold around the 150p/kg.
Cast Sheep
There was a similar number of 520 ewes forward this week selling to a slightly sharper trade with, once again, an entry mainly consisting of leaner and hill ewes. Leading the way this week was Texel ewes from JG & PH Thompson, Selside selling to £89. Beltex ewes sold to £88 from JA & DE Batty & Sons, Burneside with Charollais ewes selling to £85 from AJ Robinson, Yealand Redmayne. Other Texel ewes sold to £85 from JW & A Matthews, Kendal. Leicester ewes sold to £84 from GA Lambert, Gatebeck. Plenty of pens of Continental ewes sold around the £80 mark. Mule ewes topped at £80 from WR Clarke & Partners, Carnforth with other best pens of Mule ewes selling around the £70 mark. Horned ewes sold to a top of £61 for Swaledales from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with other pens sold to £52 from the same home. Best horned ewes sold around the £40 mark with leaner types mid to late twenties.
