Calves
There was another good day in the Calf ring with another strong trade show of 60 Calves forward. There was a few new vendors forward today with all leaving pleased. British Blue bulls sold to £430 twice from A Brown, Carnforth with Blue heifers from the same home selling to £340. A month old Blue bull from JW & TE Sharp, Lyth hit the heights of £350 with all Blue calves forward averaging £290. A strong Shorthorn bull calf sold to £320 from RG & JA Clarke, Endmoor with a Fleckvieh from the same home sold to £300. Young native calves were a little harder the place this morning selling to £210 for a Hereford bull from R & JE Wharton, Appleby.
Dairy bred calves were a stronger trade this morning topping at £190 from Messrs Wilson, Allithwaite with others to £110 from CG Birkett, Carnforth with the best sorts selling between £90 and £108 with others selling between £60 to £78, to average £68.
There was another nice show of young stirks forward today with Limousin and British Blue from GD & MA Long, Ulverston topping at £410 for 6 month old heifers with a nice run of 4 month old Angus heifers from MA & S Johns, Brough selling to £330. A few dairy bred stirks forward this morning sold to £370 for Fleckvieh bullocks from GD & MA Long.

Cast Cows
Cull cows remain a strong trade with all sold averaging 110p/kg. Well-meated beef cows were in short supply with more of these needed each sale. Top priced cow was 157.5p/kg for a Limousin x from N Cooper & Sons, Broughton in Furness with other beef cows generally 115p/kg–140p/kg depending on age and quality.
Dairy cows topped at 114.5p/kg from JJ & MA Park & Son, Helsington with medium parlour type cows 95p/kg- 105p/kg with just the leanest cows less. Top grossing cow was a Limousin x achieving £1223 from N Cooper & Sons with dairy cows to £829.
Several OTM clean cattle were forward, selling to 144.5p/kg or £1012 from A Cottam, Crosthwaite with others 129p/kg. OTM dairy steers to 107p/kg for an Ayrshire from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg.
A Dexter cull bull sold at 101p/kg or £616.
Store Cattle
The sale of store cattle saw a full ringside of buyers keen to secure stock to take advantage of the current abundance of grass. All classes and types sold to a fast trade with vendors encouraged to enter cattle for the next sale on Thursday 27th June.
The sale topped at £1020 for Hereford x steers from RJ & R Holden, Millom who also sold British Blue x heifers at £995.
Steers comprised predominantly of yearlings which sold to a top price of £855 for an Aberdeen Angus x from N Richardson, Bolton and £830, again, for an Aberdeen Angus x from R Morris-Eyton and Son, Whicham. Other native bred steers sold to £815 for a Hereford x from FP & G Slater, Witherslack and £800 for Red Polls from SEW Temple, Quernmore. Younger steers sold to £770 for 9 month old Charolais x from DN Smith, Cartmel Fell who sold others at £765. Devon steers sold £740 from GD Tyson, Haverigg. Several black and white steers were forward selling to £710.
Heifers sold to £995 with others to £885 for Limousin x from I & AJ Armer, Burneside with Luing x £800 from Low Moor Howe Farm Ltd, Winster. An abundance of yearling heifers sold to a fast trade with a 10 month old Limousin £730 from JB Dixon, Longsleddale and £720 from J Black & Son, Kentmere. Other heifers were regularly £640 -£700.
Beef Breeding Cattle
The annual show and sale of beef breeding cattle saw a large crowd of local and travelled buyers in attendance, keen to secure stock from this renowned sale.
The sale was kindly sponsored by Farmers Guardian 'Marts the Heart’ and was judged by Mr Alan Clark, Windermere.
The championship rosette was awarded to the first prize heifer from EJ Hodgson & Son, Kendal who were showing their annual draft consignment of Limousin x and British Blue x heifers with Limousin x calves at foot. This Limousin x heifer with a bull calf at foot sold for £1850 to the judge. The sale peaked at £2020 for a Limousin x heifer with heifer calf at foot from EJ Hodgson & Son selling to the judge.
Cows and calves sold to £1850 for the first prize outfit from DE & SM Moorhouse, Natland who sold a 2nd calved Limousin x cow with a Limousin heifer calf at foot selling to G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. A fast trade was seen for all breeding cattle with heifers with calves averaging £1650 and cows with calves £1420.
In-calf heifers sold to £1300 for the first prize British Blue x in-calf to a Limousin bull from TLB & J Knowles, Selside.
