Prime Hoggs

There was a smaller entry of Prime Hoggs forward this week due to the bad weather. Thanks go to those who braved the weather today and were rewarded with a strong trade. An entry of 713 forward sold to an average of 194p/kg with an SQQ average of 201p/kg with 32kg to 39kg hoggs averaging 205p/kg. Leading the trade today at 236p/kg was Beltex hoggs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead which sold to £90 with others from the same good home selling to 226p/kg or £95. Plenty of good conformation hoggs sold in excess of 210p/kg. Top price per head was £102 for Texel hoggs from B & JM Crowe, Witherslack with other Texel hoggs selling to £100 from JG Harryman. Beltex hoggs sold to £95 from PJ Onions, Arkholme. Hill bred hoggs saw Mules sell to a top of £82 from EW & JR Parkinson, Dunsop Bridge, with Mules selling to a top of 207p/kg from J Longworth, Ulpha. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £78.50 from PJ Onions. Once again, handy weight Hoggs and light weight Continentals in strongest demand.

Cast Sheep

There was a reduced entry of just short of 350 for today’s sale selling to another buoyant trade at J36. Best Continental ewes sold in excess of the £100 mark topping at £119 from Harry Geldard, Levens. This was closely followed by £113 from K Birkett, Burton-in-Kendal for Texels, with WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale selling to £117 and £107. Plenty of sheep sold around the £90 mark. Mule ewes were a sharper trade this week, twice topping at £75 from D Crowe, Witherslack and K Armer, Kendal. Plenty of big Mule ewes sold around the £70 mark. Horned ewes saw Lonks sell to £58 and £57 from GJ Ibbetson, Roeburndale West with Swaledales selling to a top of £49. Plenty of strong horned ewes sold in the mid to late forties. Leaner smaller ewes were a slightly sharper trade.
