Prime Hoggs

The opening sale of Prime Hoggs for 2019 saw a reduced entry of 667 forward for the sale selling to a sharper trade than the previous week. The overall market average was 198p/kg with an SQQ average of 201p/kg. Top price of the day was £107 for Texel Lambs from Dave Dixon, Grayrigg. Beltex lambs sold to a top of £100 from JG Harryman, Hawkshead with plenty of lambs selling in the nineties. Top pence per kilo was 233p/kg from JG & PH Thompson, Selside with Beltex lambs this was closely followed by 228p/kg from SJ & NS Wood, Windermere. Plenty of good conformation Beltex type lambs regularly sold in excess of 220p/kg. Hill lambs saw Cheviots sell to £94 and £93 from S Crawford of Staveley. Mules sold to a top of £89 from ST & SE Allen, Tebay with other Mules to £85. Horned lambs topped at £79 for Dalesbred from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. Light lambs continue to be a competitive trade.

Cast Sheep

A smaller entry of cast ewes this week sold to a sharper trade for all specifications. Topping the trade today was Dave Dixon of Grayrigg selling a Texel tup to £101. There was a plain entry of cast ewes this week which saw a shortage of heavy weight ewes. Topping the ewe trade was Continental ewes selling to £83. Mule ewes topped at £68 with plenty of Mule ewes selling into the sixties. Hill bred sheep topped at £57 for Herdwicks from Low Moor Howe, Winster. Swaledale ewes sold to £50 from J & M Wilson, Selside with plenty of Swaledales selling into the forties.
