J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock - Tuesday 26th January

Prime Pigs

A strong entry of 32 prime pigs were forward at J36, which saw a top price of £109 achieved for white gilts and hogs from KF Sweeting, Ulverston. Pietrain x boars sold to £102 from P Baxter, Avonbridge and gilts to £96 from D Baldwin, Satterthwaite.

Well-fleshed white pigs were generally 85-95p/kg with buyers cautious of overweight or over fat pigs. Six buyers were competing today for all pigs. More are needed at the next sale on Tuesday 12 March 2019.

Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had a smaller entry of 791 with better quality offering of hoggs in general this week. There as an overall market average of 185p/kg with an SQQ average of 190p/kg. Best quality hoggs were a sharper trade this week with heavy weight hoggs selling to a sharper trade. Leading the way today was Alan Thompson, Carnforth selling Beltex hoggs to £115 and Texels to £113, with the full consignment averaging well over £100. A consignment of 36 Beltex hoggs from JG Harryman, Hawkshead sold to a top of £108.50 and £106 or 246p/kg and 235p/kg with the entire consignment averaging £101.80. Other Beltex hoggs sold to 243p/kg and 234p/kg from RHM & S Boyren, Ulverston. Charollais hoggs sold to a top of £106 from J Stott, Kendal with Suffolks selling to £105, twice from E Needham, Kendal. Heavy weight 52kg plus well-finished Continental and Suffolk hoggs easily sold in excess of £90, in which more could have easily been sold. Hill bred hoggs sold to a top of £94.50 for heavy weight Mashams from JE Read, Carnforth. Cheviots sold to a top of £87 and £86 from S Crawford, Staveley. Mules sold to a top of £80 for 45kg from M & C Booth, Kentmere with 44kg Mules selling to £79.50 from EW & JR Parkinson, Clitheroe. Commercial handy weight Continental hoggs sold around the 200p/kg mark. Light weight hill hoggs saw Herdwicks sell to 201p/kg or £74.50 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal with 33kg hoggs selling to £66 or 200p/kg from Messrs Edmondson, Great Langdale.

Cast Sheep

The weekly sale of Cast Sheep had an entry of 421 forward. The trade sold to a top of £128 for Charollais from J Stott Jnr, Stainton with others from the same home selling to £99. Beltex x tups sold to £97 and £95 from CA & J Alty & Son, Wharton with Texel tups selling to £94 from JC Dunning, Orton. Continental ewes sold to £94 from CA & J Alty & Son with others to £90 from Alan Thompson. Cheviot Mules sold to a top of £77 from WS Burrows & Sons, Silverdale. Mule ewes sold to a top of £70 from JC Dunning, with Mashams topping at £67 from JH Atkinson & Partners, Selside, with plenty of pens of Mules selling into the sixties. Cheviot ewes sold to a top of £59 from CP Bateman, Docker and £58 from Naddle Farms. Swaledale ewes topped at £56 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others to £55 from RS & BA Harker, Carnforth. Smaller leaner ewes sold to a sharper trade this week.
