Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The weekly sale of Sheep with Lambs at foot had an increased entry of 174 outfits selling to a strong trade with many fresh purchasers ringside looking to buy. Once again, young sheep and quality outfits were in strongest demand. Leading the way today was Continental shearlings with Beltex x twins selling to £212 from D Cockett, Ingleton. Mule shearlings with Texel twins sold to a top of £212, twice and £210 from J & T Hunter, Dent. Mule ewes with Texel twins sold to a top of £202 from G & KM Atkinson, Colby with others selling to £192 from the same good home. Aged Continental ewes with twins sold to £172 twice from CR Alderson & Son, Mallerstang and from D Cockett, Ingleton. Young Continental sheep with singles sold to £138 from R Colbear, Appleby with other Continental sheep with single lambs selling to £132 from S & W Dickinson, Tebay.

Spring Lambs

There was a much increased entry of 150 Spring Lambs forward for the sale, selling to an overall market average of 243p/kg with an SQQ average of 253p/kg. Top price per head today was £121 for Suffolk x lambs from MJ Waller, Lupton weighing 43kg. This was closely followed by 44kg Suffolks selling to £117 from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe and 44kg Suffolks sold to £116 from T Redmayne, Carlisle, with 48kg Suffolks also making £116 from JN & DJ Bowes, Crook. Charollais sold to £116 from PW Rhodes Ltd, Ulverston and Dorsets to the same price from D Black, Milnthorpe. Hampshires sold to a top of £114 from J & O Galbraith & Son, Endmoor. Texel sold to a top of £114 and £113 from MJ Waller. Continentals sold to 287p/kg from FE & CM Robinson & Son, Crooklands. Beltexs sold to 286p/kg and 282p/kg from AE Atkinson & Son, Endmoor. Suffolks sold to 281p/kg from MJ Waller with Hampshires to 278p/kg from J & O Galbraith & Son.

Prime Hoggs

There was an entry of 600 Prime Hoggs forward this week selling to a continued strong trade. Topping the market today at £134 was heavyweight Texels from I Ridding, Old Hutton with others to £121 from the same home. Heavyweight Texel hoggs sold to £121.50 from G Rawsthorne, Cartmel. Beltex hoggs sold to £104 from JG Harryman, Hawkshead with Texels selling to £101 from the same home. Suffolks topped at £96 from RH & A Walling, Crosthwaite. Hoggs sold to a top of 253p/kg twice and 252p/kg for Beltexs from JG Harryman. Herdwicks sold to a top of 237p/kg from TE Booth, Staveley. Plenty of pens of Hoggs sold around the 220p/kg mark. There was an overall market average of 200p/kg with an SQQ of 203p/kg.

Cast Sheep
There was the strongest cast ewe trade seen for some time at J36 in which more could have easily been sold to the advantage of the vendor. The trade topped at an impressive £172 for a Bluefaced Leicester tup from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton. This was closely followed by another Leicester tup selling to £150 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Suffolk tups topped at £134 from D Koller, Over Kellet. Teeswaters sold to a top of £132 from DE & J Waine, Longsleddale. Cheviot Mule ewes topped at £128 from Drinkall Bros with Charollais ewes to £120 from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake. Beltex ewes topped at £119 from MA & JA Winn, Burneside. There were twenty pens that sold in excess of £100. Mule ewes topped at £85 twice from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill and RI Dixon, Low Newton. Numerous pens of ewes easily sold into the eighties. Horned sheep sold to a top of £75 for Rough Fells from G & ID Postlethwaite with others to £74 from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell. Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £71 from E Parker, Carnforth and £69 from J & M Wilson, Selside. Herdwick ewes topped at £70 from WG & D Wilkinson, Blawith. All cast sheep forward today averaged £72.79.
