Spring Lambs

There was the largest entry of Spring Lambs to date this season which saw an entry of 145 forward. Topping the market at £119 was S Blades, Arkholme with Texel lambs who also sold Suffolks to £116 and Texels to £114. S Wilson & Son, Scotforth sold Texels to £117, £115, £110, £109 and Suffolks to £113. WN Smith & Son, Cockerham sold Texels to £114 and to £107. Charollais sold to a top of £110 from PW & DW Roskell, Pilling. Top pence per kilo was S Blades selling to 285p/kg, 277p/kg and 270p/kg, S Wilson & Sons sold his Texel lambs to 274p/kg, 273p/kg and 272p/kg. Charollais lambs sold to a top of 262p/kg. Three quarter bred and pure-bred lambs sold to a market average of 263p/kg. All Spring Lambs forward sold to an average of £98.58.

Prime Hoggs

The weekly sale of Prime Hoggs had an entry of 586 forward selling to an overall market averaged of 183p/kg with an SQQ of 191p/kg. Topping the market this week was Beltex hoggs from BD Wood, Out Rawcliffe and Texels from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth who sold hoggs to £98. This was closely followed by Texels selling to £96 from AG Butler, Hambleton and T & CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping. Suffolks sold to a top of £93 from T & E Burrow, Slyne. The top pence per kilo for the day was 224p/kg from BR & S Carter, Pilling.

Cast Sheep

The cast ewe trade remains strong, once again, saw another good entry of just short of 100 forward selling to a slightly sharper trade this week than last. Topping the market today was Texel ewes selling to £140 from T & CM Kelsall and sons of Chipping. This was closely followed by Suffolk’s to £114 and Texel’s to £112 from G & N Ball & Son of Great Eccleston with other continental ewes selling to £100. There was plenty of continental and Suffolk ewes selling into the nineties. Mule ewes twice sold to a top of £85 from G Riley of Bolton-le-Sands and from A & FM Bolland of Ellel with plenty of other pens selling into the eighties and all Mule ewes averaged £75.58. Horned sheep sold to a top of £62 for Swaledales from KJ & KM Curwen, Abbeystead with other Swaledales selling to £60 from B & SE Carter, Ellel and BM Pye & Son, Abbeystead.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

There was a smaller entry of sheep with lambs at foot this week but there was still plenty of demand. Aged Continental ewes with twin lambs at foot sold to a top of £175 from LE & A Ridding, Selside. Continental ewes with single lambs at foot sold to £140 or £70 a life from W Pinder Jnr, Newton-in-Bowland. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with twin lambs sold to £150 from LE & A Ridding with aged Mashams with Twins selling to £148 from W Pinder Jnr.
