Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Friday 3rd May

Store Cattle

The weekly sale of store cattle, once again, had a strong trade for ages and types. Topping the market this week was R & E Ladds, Kendal selling to Limousin steers to £1330 this closely followed by a consignment from GR Bargh & Co, Caton who sold Limousin and Charolais to £1320 with Limousins to £1300 and Blondes to £1260. British Blues sold to a top of £1290 and £1280 from H & JA Gorst, Caldervale. Angus bullocks sold to a top of £1240 from J Tattersall, Leyland. Plenty of pens of Steers sold easily in excess of the twelve hundred pound mark. The consignment from AG Riley, Nether Kellet saw Limousin heifers sell to £1240 and £1170. Charolais heifers sold to £1200 from WA Hodgson, Whinfell with Limousins to £1190 from JG & BJ Escolme, Killington. Angus heifers topped at £1160 from J Tattersall, Leyland. Black and whites sold to a top of £1040 this week from R & E Ladds with others selling to £1020 from the same home. Also achieving £1020 was L Parsons & Sons, Levens.

All steers forward averaged £1018.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had an entry of over of over a hundred forward selling to a good trade as per usual at Lancaster. Leading the way this week was Charolais Cast Steers from G, GU & D Swarbrick, Grange-Over-Sands selling to 179.5p/kg. Black and white cast steers topped at 171.5p/kg from JT & U Garth, Ellel with black and white heifers selling to 169.5p/kg or £1139 from AW & AM Park & Sons, Ellel. Beef cows twice sold to a top of 154.5p/kg for Limousins from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton and Simmentals from E Rossall, Preesall. Dairy cows saw young Friesians sell to 144.5p/kg from KE Robinson, Farleton with 13 year old Montbeliarde cows selling to 141.5p/kg or £1018 from RW & CM Lawrenson, Winmarghleigh. Plenty of good, fit dairy cows were selling in excess of 130p/kg. There was an overall market average of 124p/kg. All black and white cows averaged 118p/kg.

Calves and Stirks

There were a better number of calves on offer this week which saw all types in strong demand. The consignment of British Blue calves from J & G Thornley, Kirkham sold saw bulls sell to £445 and £425, twice with heifers selling to £375 and £370. Limousin bull calves sold to top of £395 and £375 from JM Capstick, Ashton-with-Stodday. Native calves sold to a top of £300 for Angus bulls from Wallbank Farms with other Angus bulls selling to £290 from WN & D Smith & Sons, Cockerham and a Hereford bull calf sold to £280 from Wallbank Farms. There was a strong trade for good quality for black and white bull calves topping at £170 from J & G Thornley and a consignment from CG Birkett, Carnforth sold to £100 three times. GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth sold black and whites tot £98 and WN & D Smith & Sons sold to £92 and £82. All Friesian bull calves averaged £61.80.
