J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Store Cattle - Thursday 4th April

Calves

Once again, Calves at J36 were met with plenty of demand with heifer calves especially seeing a flying trade. A tremendous Charolais heifer calf from first time vendors CM & CS Chappelhow, Clifton Dykes topped trade at £425 with other strong Limousin heifer calves from the same home selling to £390. British Blue heifer calves topped at £310, twice from B Mallinson & Son, Levens and from RA & E Edmondson, Levens. Others heifers sold to £280 for an Angus from R Morris-Eyton & Son, Whicham. Beef bred bull calves were met with plenty of demand topping at £350 for Blue bulls from RA & E Edmondson with other Blues selling to £330 from R Morris-Eyton & Son with a month old Blue bull selling to £320 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg. All Blue bull calves averaged £320. There was four active buyers for dairy bred bull calves, a young show forwarded topped at £90 from AV Lord & Co, Ulverston with others to £88 from RG & JA Clark, Endmoor.

A strong trade was had for the 40 Stirks on offer today with a top of £550 achieved for British Blue and Aberdeen Angus bullocks from Kirkby & Longworth, Ulpha with Blue heifer from the same good home selling to £500. A run of 4 month old Angus bulls from MA & S Johns, Brough peaked at £420. A few dairy bred stirks this morning topped at £230 for 3 month old Fleckvieh from A Prickett, Farlton.

Cast Cows

Cull cows sold to 137.5p/kg for a Hereford cow from DJ Dickinson, Haverthwaite with others 119.5p/kg. Dairy cows peaked at 101.5p/kg for Swedish Red and Whites from RG & J Clark, Endmoor. Top grossing today was £731 for a Hereford cow from DJ Dickinson with all cows averaging 105p/kg.

More cows are needed to meet demand with buyers keen to attend the next sale on Thursday 18th April.

Store Cattle

With many farmers in the middle of lambing and a lighter entry of cattle forward than anticipated, buyers ringside were keen to secure stock ahead of turn out. Strong steers sold to £1190 for Aberdeen Angus x from Messrs Hodgson, Penrith with Charolais x from RW Nicholson achieving £1100 and Hereford x £1070 from MJ Waller. Yearling steers sold to £1120 for Blonde x from B & R Barnes with other well bred sorts £950 - £1100. Younger suckler bred steers sold to £850 for an 8 month old Limousin x from T Ayrton & Sons. Several dairy bred steers were forward selling to £960 for Fleckvieh from RW Nicholson with young Herefords to £460. Heifers sold to £960 for Simmental x from SW Atkinson & Son with other stronger sorts £880 - £950. Nice suckler bred yearlings topped at £880 for British Blue x from HR & KA Hodgson, £840 Limousin x MP & H York, others were generally £740 - £800. 8 month old Aberdeen Angus x heifers from J Stott achieved £670. There were several young bulls forward selling to £950 for Limousin x from T Ayrton & Sons with 6 month old Simmental x £770 from C McCuckin.

The next sale of cattle is Thursday 18 April with keen buyer interest already expressed so vendors are encouraged to enter cattle.
