Sheep with Lambs at Foot

There was an increased entry of 87 sheep with lambs at foot for the weekly sale, which saw a busy ringside of buyers and an increased trade for the best types with others harder to place this week. The market today was topped by J & M Wilson, Selside selling Texel ewes with Twin lambs to £235 and £230, with Texel ewes sucking singles selling to £145. Aged Mule ewes sucking twins sold to a top of £175, twice from the same good home. Broken mouthed Mule ewes with twins topped at £168 from D & K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe.

Prime Hoggs

There was a larger entry of prime hoggs which were met with a much stronger trade this week at J36 in which more well-fed hoggs could have been easily sold with buyers leaving short of their requirements. There was an overall market average of 193p/kg with 39-45kg hoggs averaging 201p/kg. Beltex lambs topped the market this week selling to a top of £110 and £109 or 253p/kg and 242p/kg from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. All Beltexs forward averaged 234p/kg. Texels sold to a top of £103 from GM & A Jackson, with others selling to £100 and £99.50 from D Metcalfe, Dalton-in-Furness Texels also sold to £99 from TW Nelson & Son, Stainton. There was plenty of good handy weight Texel Hoggs selling between 210-225p/kg. Mule hoggs topped at £96.50 for 50kg hoggs from Moorhouse Farms, Isle of Man with all Mule hoggs today averaging £86.90. Horned hoggs sold to a top of £87.50 from Moorhouse Farms with Herdwicks selling to £85 from Messrs Hodgson, Rydal with all Herdwick hoggs averaging 205p/kg.

Cast Sheep

There was a larger entry of 487 Cast Ewes this week selling to, once again, a sharp trade at J36. Topping twice at £111 was RI Dixon, Low Newton for Leicester and Suffolk ewes. Also selling in excess of the £100 mark was Suffolk ewes from T Redmayne, Ings to £104 with Texel Ewes to £103 from B & HM Wilson, Selside and others to £102 from Helen Newton, Low Levens. Plenty of sheep sold into the nineties. Mule ewes sold to a top of £94 from C Parsons, Old Hutton with others to £91 from the same home and also achieving the £90 for Mules was Moorhouse Farm. Plenty of pens of Mules into the eighties. Cheviot ewes topped at £84 from JR Handley, Whinfell with horned ewes selling to a top of £74 twice from R Lawrence, Grange-over-Sands and GJ Ibbotson, Roeburndale West. Plenty of horned ewes sold into the late sixties.
