Calves
The fortnightly sale of calves saw a top price of £270 achieved for British Blue x bull calf from R Mossis-Eyton, Whicham with others to £245 from DR & C Galbraith, Grayrigg others were nicely selling £200 to £235. Heifers peaked at £235 for a British Blue x from DR & C Galbraith and £210 from HJ Robinson & Son, Preston Patrick.
Native bred calves sold to £200 for an Aberdeen Angus x heifer from BJ & M Tomlinson, Salwick who also sold bulls at £200. Younger native bulls and heifers sold between £100 and £160. A lack of strength on the black and white section this week saw mediums achieve £40 to £50 and smaller sorts were £25 to £35.
The next sale will be held on Thursday 13th December and includes the Christmas Show for Calves.
Cast Cows/OTM Cattle
The sale of Cast Cows this week sold to a top of 109p/kg for a Hereford x cow from JE Wightman, Lupton with others generally 95p/kg to 105p/kg for Beef Cows. Leaner sorts were between 85p/kg and 92p/kg. Dairy cows peaked at 92p/kg from JW Hargreaves, Broughton. Meated dairy cows sold between 85p/kg and 95p/kg with parlour cows between 65p/kg and 75p/kg. Top grossing price today was £792 for a British Blue x from J & J Postlethwaite, Sedbergh.
Several OTM Heifers sold to 124p/kg and £643, Cast Steers sold to 109p/kg and £637 and Cast Bulls sold to 99p/kg and £764.
Store Cattle
The fortnightly sale of Store Cattle saw a mixed entry forward with cattle now showing the effects of the winter conditions. Limousin x Steers sold to £740 with Aberdeen Angus’ achieving the same price. Young Angus steers sold to £650 with Herefords selling to £620. Native bred cattle were easier to sell with a named sire status.
Heifers sold to £620 for 7 month old Blonde, with others to £560. Hereford heifers sold to £500.
A 7 year old in-calf Limousin Cow due March sold for £650.
The next sale of Store Cattle will be on Thursday 13th December and include the Christmas Show for Pairs of Cattle. Sale also includes a dispersal of Highland Cows, Youngstock and Bull.
