Lancaster Livestock Auction: Store Cattle & Stirks - Friday 30th November

Store Cattle

A few less Store Cattle on offer this week sold to a very similar trade. Topping the trade this week was Limousin bullocks from GA & A Atkinson, Cantsfield selling to £1300. This was closely followed by a Bazadaise bullock from FA Nowell & Partners, Mewth. As usual plenty of interest in native bred cattle at Lancaster saw Angus bullocks sell to £1220 form G Sagar & Son, Caton. Once again, plenty of bullocks selling around the £1200 mark. Heifers sold to a top of £1190 for British Blues from P Lawrenson & Son, Brindle. Dairy bred bullocks sold to a top of £1100 for Montbeliardes from H Birkett & Son, Overton. Black and whites topped at £940 from JT & J Kelsall, Clapham.

Next week is the Christmas show of Store Cattle for pairs of bullocks and heifers.

OTM Cattle

The weekly sale of Cast Cows had a smaller entry of 96 forward which saw all specifications of cows sell to a sharper trade. The trade was topped by Angus cast steers selling to 189.5p/kg or £1174 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale, who also sold Angus cast heifers to 169.5p/kg or £981. Beef cows sold to a top of 174.5p/kg or £1062 for British Blues from CG Birkett, Carnforth. Simmental cows sold to a top of £1059 from JL & LM Clarke, Tunstall. Black and white heifers sold to 161.5p/kg or £944 from WS Burrow & Son, Silverdale with cows selling to a top of 154.5p/kg or £899 from Messrs Jones, Cockerham. There was an overall market average of 103p/kg with black and whites averaging 90p/kg.

Next week includes in the Christmas Show of Cast Cows with prizes awarded to the highest price beef cow per kilo, highest price diary cow per kilo and overall highest price per head.

Calves and Stirks

The monthly sale of Stirks, once again, had an entry of 140 which sold to a respectable trade for all types. Topping the trade today at £700 was Angus bullocks from MJ & K Ayrton, Thurnham who also sold Limousin bullocks to £650 and £600. British Blue bullocks sold to a top of £580 from S & IA Morley, Poulton le Fylde. Plenty of spring born beef bullocks sold in the mid to late five hundreds. The bulls were topped by mid May born Limousins from DJ Townley, Lancaster. Heifer trade topped at £460 from MJ & K Ayrton. There was a large number of Black and whites on offer which saw spring born stirks sell to £470 from R & A Jolleys of Cabus with plenty of black and white bullocks selling around the £400 mark.

There was just a handful of calves on offer today with vendors holding off for the Christmas show next Friday. Show classes next week are for calves 56 days or under. Please advise Ian Atkinson of entries on 07766 521472.
