J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock Tuesday 10th July

Pigs

There was a large entry of pigs forward today with a full clearance achieved.

A wonderful entry of prime pigs sold to a top price of £119 for Pietrain gilts from TW Burne with others selling to £116 from G Lacey. White gilts from A Preston sold to £109. Top price per kilo went to TW Burne selling gilts at 117p/kg with others generally between 105p/kg and 115p/kg. Well-finished hogs and boars sold to £103 from A Preston and 103p/kg from G Lacey.

A small number of stores and weaners sold to £48 for Saddleback gilts from HMP Wymott and £44 for Pietrain X from G Lacey. Other weaners sold to £30, £26 and leaner stores to £31 and £19.

Spring Lambs

There was an entry of over 1000 prime lambs forward today. The trade had slipped this week, as seen nationally, but saw good conformation, well-fleshed lambs and heavy weight lambs were in strong demand and good to sell today. Leaner types harder to place. There were still best quality lambs selling in excess of £100 topping at £106 from JG & BJ Escolme of Killington for Texel lambs. Beltex lambs sold to £101 or 259p/kg from J Holmes and Son of Ulverston. Well-meated, good conformation lambs sold in the region of 200p/kg. The overall market average was 169p/kg, with those weighing between 45-52kg selling to a market average of 179p/kg.

Prime Hoggs

There was in the region of fifty hoggs in the market today selling to a sharper trade then the previous week as numbers now begin to dry up.

Cast Sheep

There were more ewes on offer this week which had a sharper trade. Continental ewes sold in excess of £100 for best types. Topping the trade was Texel ewes from T & CM Kelsall and Son of Chipping selling to £109 with others to £105 from RHM & S Boyren of Ulverston and P & SA Edmondson of Stainton. Cheviot ewes sold to a top of £94 from AR & C Fawcett of Seascale. Mule ewes sold to a top of £79 for a pen of 10 from KE Richards of Crook o Lune with plenty of strong fit Mule ewes selling in the mid-seventies. Horned ewes sold to a top of £66 for Rough Fell ewes from E Murdock of Kendal.
