Pigs

The Prime Pig sale saw 15 forward at the sale held on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

All pigs forward were well bred and finished white gilts and castrated boars. There was plenty of interest which reflected in a strong market average of 136p/kg.
The top price of the day was £130 or 148p/kg for a pen of six castrated boars from D Nicholson of Cockermouth with gilts from the same home selling to £122. All prime forwards forward averaged £122 per head with all pigs forward weighing between 64kg and 89kg.

Prime Hoggs

This week’s Prime Hogg sale saw the strongest trade seen for some time, with a smaller entry of 600 forward selling to a market average of 216p/kg.
Hoggs weighing between 39kg and 45kg sold to an average of 222p/kg. The trade topped today for Heavy weight Texel Hoggs at £131 and £129 from JB Airey of Kendal. Beltex Hoggs sold to a top of £127 from JG Harryman of Hawkshead.
Heavy weight Hoggs were in big demand with all weighing over 46kgs selling to an average of 214p/kg. Beltex and best conformation Hoggs sold in excess of the 240p/kg mark topping at 265p/kg and 258p/kg from JG Harryman of Hawkshead. There were numerous pens of mid forty kilo well finished Continental Hoggs selling over £100.

Hill bred Hoggs saw heavy weight Dalesbred’s sell to a top of £106 from BD Gill of Ingleton.Mules topped at £102 for 45kg from EJ & M Redmayne of Samlesbury closely followed by J & CG Redmayne of Samlesbury selling 45kg to £100. Masham’ sold to £99.50 from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock.

Cast Sheep

A smaller entry of cast sheep forward sold to a strong trade.

Best continental ewes sold in excess of £100 selling to a top of £117 from AE Atkinson of Endmoor closely followed by IL Dixon of Cantsfield selling to £110. Beltex ewes topped at £103 from LM & C Whitaker of Kirkby in Furness with plenty of continental and Suffolk ewes selling either side of the ninety-pound mark.

Best mule ewes sold over the eighty-pound mark topping at £86 from J & L Tyson of Milnthorpe with W Garnett and Son of Milnthorpe selling to £84. Horned ewes topped at £70 for Dalesbred’s from BD Gill of Ingleton closely followed by Rough fells from GR Park and Sons of Whinfell selling to £64 and Herdwick’s to £58 from D Wood of Rivington.
