J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: Primestock Tuesday 6th February 2018

Prime Hoggs

There was a smaller entry of prime Hoggs this week with just 970 forward due to the bad weather conditions this morning. A mixed entry of Hoggs saw many vendors coming to end of their consignments. An overall market average of 196p/kg was achieved with 39-45kg Hoggs selling to an average of 199p/kg.

The trade topped at £113 from NJ Strickland and Son of Whinfell with a heavy weight Texel Hogg, closely followed by Texel Hoggs from JG Harryman of Hawkshead selling to £109. Numerous pens of Hoggs weighing 50kg and above sold in excess of £100.

There was plenty of interest and trade for Beltex Hoggs topping at 242p/kg or £102 from JG Harryman with others selling to 231p/kg from J & AM Mason of Kirkby Lonsdale.Plenty of well-fed Texel Hoggs selling easily in excess of 200p/kg often selling around 210p/kg.

There was a large number of hill bred Hoggs in the market. Mules sold to a top of £98.50 from NJ Strickland and Son for heavy weights with others to £95 from DC Miller of Claughton on Brock. Standard weights sold to £90.50 again from DC Miller. Scotch Blackface Hoggs sold to £82 or 209p/kg from Williamson Brothers of Ulverston.

Cast Sheep

There was a smaller entry of just shy of 300 cast ewes in the market selling to a similar trade to the previous week. This week saw a very mixed entry of ewes forward.
Texel cast ewes sold to a top of £99 and £90 from E Dodgson of Kendal.

Mule ewes sold in excess of £70 selling to a top of £73 numerous times from JF & AW Sutton of Longsleaddale, JA Alderson of Barras and JB Airey of Kendal.

The horned ewe and ram trade was very dependent on how much flesh the sheep had on them topping at £77 for Rough Fell Tups from AJ & CM Harrison of Kentmere with Swaledale Ewes to £60 from JA Alderson of Barras.
