Store Cattle

The weekly sale of Store Cattle had a reduced entry of 196 forward no doubt resulting due to the recent weather conditions. The sale topped at £1380 for Limousin x Steers from MS Dugdale& Sons, Carnforth with other pens of well grown short keep steers £1200 to £1300. The next best were selling to £1000 to £1150 with buyers showing preference for Farm Assured cattle showing conformation and size. Heifers sold to £1160 for Aberdeen Angus x from A Thornton, Preston, with other short keep cattel selling from £980 to £1100. Black and White Steers sold to £960 on three occasions with well framed sorts sold from £750 to £820.

OTM Cattle

A few less OTM cattle about with vendors having sold hard these last few weeks, with 75% of the entry being dairy cows. Nicemeated beef cows sold to 1495p.kg for Limousin x from JG & PH Thompson, Selside, with others generally 124 to 135p/kg. Holstein Friesian cattle sold to 134p/kg from Bradley Farms Lts, Preesall, with other meated cows to 110 to 120p/kg. Mediums to 95 to 105p/kg with parlour sorts selling to 75 to 90p/kg, depending on weight.

OTM Heifers sold to 169p/kg for a Hereford x from DH & M Kellet& Sons, Thurnham, with all sold averaging 143p/kg. Several stock bulls today sold to 124p/kg for Holstein Friesians from WE & G Hewitt & Son, Cockerham, with others 110 to 120p/kg.

Top price per head today was £1112 for Stabilser x from MG & HM Capstick, Heversham. All sold today averaged 107p/kg (£642)

Calves

One of the largest entries of recent weeks saw a total of 78 forward, with buyers being more selective with stock purchases and showing caution due to the current feed situation. The calves today would generally be younger than recent sales and this, once again, reflected in the prices achieved. The strongest calves today sold to £420 for a British Blue x bull from J & G Thornley Ltd, Preston, who sold others to £385 and heifers to £370. Beef bull calves generally were selling £180 to £240 with younger sorts £120 to £150. The best of the natives saw young Aberdeen Angus x from Cornthwaite Moors Ltd, Hambleton achieve £248. Heifer calves were generally younger today with the best British Blues selling from £200 to £240 with others £170 to £200. Native heifers sold to £170 for Hereford x and £150 for Aberdeen Angus x from R Morris-Eyton& Son, Millom.

Dairy bulls sold to £100 for Holstein Friesian from R Morris-Eyton& Son with nice rearers generally £60 to £85, mediums were £40 to £60 with the youngest and smallest less. All dairy bulls sold to an average of £45.

A few stirks in today sold to £270 for a Angus x heifers from A Talbot, Aughton.
