Prime Lambs

The weekly sale of prime lambs saw a larger entry of prime lambs forward this week with 1263 going under the gavel and selling to a market average of 156p/kg. Heavy, well-finished lambs continue to be eagerly bid for and good to sell with grass fed lambs short of finish and hard to place. Beltex type lambs are in strong demand with the best types easily selling around the 200p/kg mark topping at 220p/kg from AR & C Fawcett of Gosforth or £99. Consignments of Beltex lambs sold to 203p/kg from RHM & S Boyren of Ulverston, 203p/kg from JG & PH Thompson of Selside and 202p/kg from PJ Onions, Keer Falls.

Cast Sheep

There was a plainer entry of ewes on offer today with plainer and leaner types harder to sell at the moment for seasonal reasons, the wet summer and the large quantity of lean ewes available. Big fit ewes continue to be very good to sell for the time of year. The trade topped at £85 for a Texel Ewe from P Stephenson, Cleatop Farm followed by A & E Atkinson, Stubb Farm selling Texels to £83.

Pigs

The fortnightly prime pig sale saw an entry of 31 forward. There has seen a slip in prime pig trade over recent weeks at other local centres but quality pigs continued to sell well with well-finished pigs with good conformation with some Pietrain in their breeding approximately weighing 100kg were in strongest demand selling to a top of 131p/kg.
