The Annual Show & Sale of Fell Ponies on behalf of the Fell Pony Society by North West Auctions, once again, attracted a packed ringside of prospective purchasers, proving to be, once again, one of the busiest sales of the year held at J36 Rural Auction Centre, with people from all across the UK in attendance, attracted by the quality bloodlines on offer in the catalogue.
Top price of the day was achieved by ‘Greenholme Jemima’, a 2-year-old Grey filly with a fantastic movement from Mrs S Mallinson of Nab House. The filly by noted sire ‘Greenholme Look At Me’, attracted lots of attention before the sale and was knocked down for the leading price of 1600gns.
The 4th Prize in Class 2 (Fell Pony aged 1-3 years) a Black filly, also 2 years old from the same original home, forward from Ms H Wilson of Wath Farm followed on to achieve 1450gns. ‘Greenholme Jenna’ noted as being sired by ‘Greenholme Warrior’, with bloodlines tracing back to the ‘Lunesdale’ Stud.
Closely following was ‘Firtreeroyal Duchess’ forward from Miss Olivia Swailes of Thurstane Street, a fully broken 14hh 7-year-old black mare. Sired by ‘Heltondale Star Boy III’, she was knocked down for 1400gns.
In the Registered Colt or Filly Foal Class, the trade was topped by ‘Greenholme Lucas’ forward from RJ & BK Potter of the Greenholme Stud. The Grey colt was placed 6th in the pre-sale show, attracting attention from purchasers. Sired by ‘Greenholme Ringo’ he achieved 850gns. Other lots forward from the Greenholme Stud (WS Potter); ‘Greenholme Lets See’ and ‘Greenholme Lady Hawk’ sold for 820gns and 800gns respectively.
The Overall Champion of the day was awarded to the Black Colt, ‘Greenholme Luigi’ also forward from RK&BJ Potter. The colt being sired by ‘Lunesdale Union Jack’ going back to ‘Lunesdale Warlord’, presented himself tremendously in the show arena. ‘Luigi’ went on to sell for 650gns.
The sale was noted as being an excellent trade for all lots forward, with the sale averages as follows: -
Class 1 Fell Pony 4 years plus to 1400gns ave. 741gns
Class 2 Fell Pony 1-3 years to 1600gns ave. 545gns
Class 3 Fell Pony Colt or Filly Foal to 850gns ave. 311gns.
Following on from the Fell Pony Sale, there was a handful of other Mountain & Moorland Ponies offered for Sale. The section being topped by ‘Roandale Dylan’ forward from Mr & Mrs C Parker of Hill Gill Farm. The black ¾ Dales Colt Foal sired by ‘Westwick Hamish’ went on to sell for 620gns. With a filly foal from the same home, ‘Roandale Duchess’, a Part Bred Dales x Clydesdale selling for 600gns. Shetland ponies sold to a top of 420gns for ‘Edern Ailis’ a Miniature Piebald Filly forward from Mrs B Johnstone of Mally Close Drive.
