Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Weekly Sale of Calves, OTM Cattle & Store Cattle, Friday 31st January 2025.

A roaring hot trade at NWA Lancaster saw any winter blues melt away. A prompt start to the day saw over 500 cattle sold in just over two hours between three sale rings. All vendors left extremely well suited with prices achieved and trade reported as being well ahead of other local sale centres.

CAST / OTM CATTLE

The day’s trading commenced with cull cows which saw an overall market average of 210p/kg and £1382 per head achieved. Cows peaked at 284p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from T&CM Kelsall & Sons, Chipping with well-bred beef cows to 259p/kg for a Limousin from G&P Middleton, Garsdale with other beef cows regularly 210p/kg to 230p/kg. Heavier well fleshed dairy cows were 195p/kg to 215p/kg, parlour types 175p/kg to 190p/kg with only the lightest and leaner less. Top grossing was again a Holstein Friesian from T&CM Kelsall & Sons achieving £1977. A Limousin achieved £1936 from G&A Atkinson, Cantsfield. Other strong cows of other breeds were £1460 to £1600, mediums £1100 to £1350 with lightest and leanest £850 to £1000.
OTM heifers sold to 324p/kg for a British Blue cross from SJ&AL Hargreaves, Middleton with diary heifers to 289p/kg from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Others were regularly 225p/kg to 260p/kg. Top grossing being a Montbeliarde from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham totalling £1969.
OTM steers sold to 329p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus cross from O Butler, Kirkham who sold another three at 324p/kg, with others regularly 260p/kg to 280p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus cross from O Butler, Kirkham at £2174 who sold another at £2171.
Cull stock bulls sold to 279p/kg and £2249 for a Simmental from Cote Parm Partnership, Nether Kellet with others 190p/kg to 210p/kg and £1600 to £2000.

CALVES

107 rearing calves saw a packed ringside of buyers, keen to secure replacement stock. The strongest of the beef bulls sold to £730 for a twelve week old British Blue cross from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel who also sold others at £700. This was closely followed by Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale at £690. Charolais cross achieved £675 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with Aberdeen Angus cross at £635 from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel. Younger ten week old bull calves sold to £585 for a Limousin from JT Towers, Tunstall with British Blue cross to £575 from JP&C Robson, Garstang and Charolais cross £560 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Other stronger rearing bulls were £440 to £480. The best month old rearing calves sold to £410 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from J&M Maudsley & Sons, Endmoor. Others were regularly £350 to £380, with only the smallest under £250. Month old black and white dairy bulls sold to £180 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham with other month old diary bulls £145 to £175.
Heifer calves sold to £630 for an eye catching twelve week old British Blue cross from JH Towers, Tunstall who sold Aberdeen Angus cross at £600. A pair of Charolais cross achieved £590, with other British Blues cross £570 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Medium heifers were regularly £380 to £440. The best month old rearers sold to £345 for Aberdeen Angus cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang, with others £290 to £310.
The sale concluded with several consignments of six to ten month old stirks, which saw ten month old British Blue cross bulls sell to £1040 from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel with others to £1000 from TD&A Gardner, Larbreck. Native bulls sold to £860, with younger six to eight month old bulls £680 to £800, depending on breed and quality.
Heifer stirks sold to £970 for a Hereford cross, again from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel who sold others at £920. Two ring fulls of Hereford cross achieved £905 and £900 from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse with others generally £640 to £750. Hereford cross steers sold to £860 from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse with recently weaned Aberdeen Angus cross to £500 from IT Richardson, Catford who also sold black and whites at £390.

STORE CATTLE

The weekly sale of stores once again saw a trade that other auctions could only dream of, with all steers forward averaging £1843 and heifers averaging £1712. Strongest steers sold to £2350 for a Limousin from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with an Aberdeen Angus at £2340 from T&E Garlick, Freckleton. Charolais topped at £2240 and British Blues £2220, endless pens of stronger end steers were £2000 to £2250. Dairy bred steers were knocking on the doors at £1950 for black and whites from ID Bailey, Catforth. Longer keep steers of all breeds were £1500 to £1850, with several buyers now looking for cattle in preparation for turnout at £1300 to £1550.
Heifers topped at £2140 for a trio of Aberdeen Angus cross from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton with Charolais cross at £2100 from R&C Parkinson, Hambleton and British Blues cross £2060 from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland. Other stronger heifers were £1780 to £1950, mediums £1500 to £1700 and younger farming sorts £1180 to £1300.
The monthly sale of young stores saw fifteen month old British Blue cross sell to £1720 from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore. Other British Blue cross achieved £1520 from T Procter, Longridge with Aberdeen Angus cross steers to £1500 for a ring full from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore. Other twelve to fourteen month old steers were regularly £1000 to £1200, with younger ten to twelve month old steers £900 to £1050. Heifers sold to £1550 for a ring full of fourteen month old Aberdeen Angus cross from JE&J Pye & Son, Quernmore with British Blue to £1380, Limousin cross £1280 and yearling heifers generally £900 to £1050.
