Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 7th June 2024.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

A few more rearing calves were forward with 65 through the ring, with these selling to an increased ringside of buyers ensuring a fierce trade throughout. Top price of the day was £625 for a British Blue bull calf from JP&C Robson, Garstang with this good home selling others at £590 and £585. A quality show of British Blue bulls were forward, which saw all of the strongest end £500 plus. Limousin bull calves topped at £560 from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall, with others from this home at £500. A handful of younger bull calves were forward with a three week old Simmental making £290 and Aberdeen Angus sold to £285 at the same age. A handful of dairy bulls sold to a top of £80 for a twenty day old Friesian from WN&D Smith, Cockerham.
A quality show of heifer calves were forward, with a keen interest in heifers for future suckler replacements. These sold to a top of £430 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Charolais’s sold to £410 from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall, with three week old Limousins and month old Aberdeen Angus at £240.
The weekly sale of weaned and reared calves continues to grow in popularity, with another entry in excessing forty at today’s sale. British Blue cross heifers sold to £760 from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh with others generally £680 to £720. Younger native and continental heifers were £550 to £600. Steers sold to £670 for British Blue cross again from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh with others £600 to £650 and native steers £520 to £600.
The best of the bulls sold to £700 for a five month old British Blue cross from WG Farms, Cockerham with others £650 to £680 and younger bulls £550 to £600.

STORE CATTLE

Another store trade which had to be seen to be believed, with buyers keen to secure cattle to keep the sheds full. The strongest steers sold to £1770 for Aberdeen Angus cross from G Sagar & Son, Caton with other Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1760 and £1690, Herefords to £1680 and Limousin cross to £1540. Stronger steers were regularly £1450 to £1600, with the younger end steers for grazing and finishing £1180 to £1300.
Heifers sold to £1540 for an Aberdeen Angus cross again from G Sagar & Son, Caton with British Blue cross and Simmental cross at £1500. Other stronger heifers were £1350 to £1480, with grazing type heifers £1000 to £1200.

CAST / OTM CATTLE

Cull cows sold to an extremely competitive trade, with all sold averaged 180p/kg, well ahead of other local centres. Beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Limousin cross, with another at £1480. Other medium feeding type beef cows were regularly 190p/kg to 215p/kg or £1200 to £1400. Dairy cows sold to 214.5p/kg and £1593, with other better end cows 180p/kg to 195p/kg and £1250 to £1400.
OTM beef heifers sold to 257p/kg and £1686 for an Aberdeen Angus cross, with others 220p/kg to 240p/kg and £1400 to £1550. Dairy heifers sold to 237.5p/kg and £1541, with others generally 185p/kg to 210p/kg and £1000 to £1200.
OTM beef steers sold to 216.5p/kg and £1704 for an Aberdeen Angus cross.
