Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auctions Weekly Sale of Calves, Store & OTM Cattle, Friday 5th July 2024.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

An increased entry of 106 calves and weanling were forward today at Lancaster, with again a nice return seen for all classes. Bull calves topped today at £600 for a Charolais from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with British Blues next in line at £565 and 560 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Native sired bulls also sold well with Aberdeen Angus up to £540. A few dairy bulls forward, which sold to a top of £240 for a pair of Friesian from JR Newsham, Conder Green with another pair at £235.
Rearing heifers sold to a top of £490 from GP Stott, Claughton on Brock for a British Blues, with others at £480 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. A good show of weaned heifer calves were forward with these topping at £550 for a British Blue from Threlkeld Ltd, Burton in Kendal, with others at £520 from E&J Redmayne, Winmarleigh. Native sired heifers sold well, with freshly weaned Aberdeen Angus to £410 from Threlkeld Ltd, Burton in Kendal. A cracking run of weaned Aberdeen Angus steers from J&M Coar, Waddington sold to £690 twice with another four at £645.

STORE CATTLE

A few less numbers about but still not let up in trade, with Simmental cross steers to £1840 from AJ Bretherton, Blackburn with Limousin cross and Aberdeen Angus cross selling to £1770 and British Blue cross £1720. Other stronger end steers were regularly £1520 to £1660. Over thirty month steers sold to £1720 for British Blues. Younger steers suitable for grazing were £1220 to £1400.
Heifers sold to a top price of £1650 for a Simmental cross again from AJ Bretherton, Blackburn with Aberdeen Angus cross to £1630, British Blue cross £1550 and Limousin cross £1490. Other stronger heifers were £1300 to £1420. Heifers for summer grazing were generally £1100 to £1220.

CAST / OTM CATTLE

Cull cows sold to an average of 179p/kg, with beef cows to 221p/kg from MA&JA Winn, Burneside and £1608 for a Shorthorn from E Lund & Son, Ingleton. Dairy cows sold to 214.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from W&S Airey, Whittington with others to £1704 from Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham. An entry of predominately dairy cows were generally 175p/kg to 190p/kg, being £1080 to £1200.
OTM beef heifers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1388 for a British Blue cross from R&D Kellet, Cockerham with dairy heifers to 249p/kg for a Norwegian cross from JK&B Birkett & Son, Morecambe and £1698 for Holstein Friesian from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale.
Cull stock bulls sold to 204p/kg and £1474 for a Limousin from TW&C Shepherd, Underbarrow.
