PRIME LAMBS
Sheep pens were full at Lancaster auction this morning, with another increased entry forward. With overall average of 300p/kg. Today’s sale peaked at £159.50 for a pen full of well-bred Texel x lambs from Myerscough College, Garstang with others from this same good home regularly £144-£154. Other heavy lambs sold to £154 from S Rossall, Over Wyresdale and £148 from KA Purtill, Wigan and £147 from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof. Well finished standard weight lambs generally £135-£145, with medium £128-£134. Several pens of lighter weight lambs selling to £109 for Texel x from W & D Bradley, Goosnargh with other at £104 from DM Eames, Abbeystead. Top p/kg today was achieved for Texel x from TR Prickett, Hutton Roof achieving 359p/kg closely followed by KA Purtill, Wigan at 352p/kg. Well finished lambs nicely selling at 305-315p/kg with standard lambs 290-302p/kg depending on quality and finish. Best light weight selling to 315p/kg. Hill bred lambs coming forward in greater numbers with heavy weight Mule selling £141 and 308p/kg, standard weight Masham lambs to £113.50 and Swaledale lambs to £95.
CAST SHEEP
140 cull ewes forward average £104 with over half the entry being leaner hill bred ewes having recently been weaned. Best meated continental ewes sold to £189 for Texel x from KA Purtill, Wigan with others at £185 and £164 from CD & HL Mason, Caton. Other medium first cross Texel x generally £140-£160. Mules sold to £140 with other better end mules £120-£130 with medium sorts £102-£115. Pure hill ewes sold to £128 for Cheviots from KM & KJ Curwen, Abbeystead with others at £115 with medium Swaledales to £72 from RW & RJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore.
