Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 15th September 2023.

Buyers and sellers descended to Lancaster Auction Mart on Friday 15th September, across three sale rings with a buoyant trade experienced throughout.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

An ever-expanding ring side of buyers saw all calves sell to their full value, with many reporting ahead of other local centres. Rearing calves sold to £415 for a British Blue x from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack with others younger bull calves selling to £392 from AD&R Milner, Claughton on Brock and £390 from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham. Native sired calves sold to £290 for an Aberdeen Angus x from CR&A Baxter & Son, Middleton with Hereford x selling to £260 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale. Dairy bulls sold to £238 for strong rearing sorts from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with nice rearing sorts generally £120 to £150 and the younger end £60 to £80.
Weaned calves saw Simmental x steers selling to £740 from Barlow Bros, Croston with younger recently weaned British Blue x bulls from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel selling to £570 with Hereford to £555 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green and other beef bulls regularly £420 to £500.
Heifer calves sold to £320 for a British Blue x from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others at £280 from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham and other rearing heifer calves generally £240 to £270 depending on breed and quality, with the very smallest and youngest £100 to £150.
Weaned heifers sold to £750 for a Simmental from Barlow Bros, Croston with recently weaned British Blue x from FW Rhodes & Son, Ellel £440 and Hereford to £242 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel.

STORE CATTLE

Charolais heifers from JM Haddow, Crookland took the headlines today achieving £1860, £1840 and £1820. Other heifers sold to £1660 for Limousin x from R&E Butterfield, Bentham with others at £1600 from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet and TE JA & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Other stronger heifers were regularly £1450 to £1550, with native heifers selling to £1500 for Aberdeen Angus x from J&M Cockett, Ingleton with others at £1460 from D Fox & Co, Bay Horse and AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton. All heifers today averaged £1345.
Charolais x steers from J&H Bland & Son, Ninezergh sold to £1850 with Limousin x selling to £1820 from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet and Aberdeen Angus x also achieving £1820 from JS Clark & Sons, Catforth. Other stronger steers were regularly £1600 to £1750. Dairy steers sold to £1500 for a Montbeliarde from J&H Bland & Son, Ninezergh, Fleckviehs to £1420 from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling and Norwegian Red and Whites to £1420 from DR Preston, Caton. All steers forward today averaged £1370.

OTM / CAST CATTLE

99 cull cows forward today sold to a market averaged of 158.3p/kg, with numbers increasing weekly as summer turns to autumn. The sale peaked at 249.5p/kg for a young Limousin x from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday with other well fleshed beef cows 195p/kg to 215p/kg. A top price of £1443 achieved for a Limousin cow from R Capstick & Son, Ingleton.
Dairy cows sold to 189.5p/kg from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine and A&J Staveley, Tatham with Montbeliarde to 184.5p/kg from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel, Swedish Red and Whites to 179.5p/kg from WG Farms, Cockerham and British Friesians to 174.5p/kg from I&ME Askew, New Hutton. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were regularly 165p/kg to 180p/kg, with mediums 145p/kg to 160p/kg and the leanest parlour types 115p/kg to 130p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow achieved £1631 for a Holstein Friesian from W&A Cardwell, Stalmine closely followed by Lawsons Dairy, Cockerham achieving £1622.
OTM heifers sold to 224.5p/kg and £1336 for a Holstien Friesian from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack.
Steers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1380 for a Simmental x from EJ Ward & Son, Nether Kellet.
Beef stock bull to 184.5p/kg and £1880 for an Aberdeen Angus from R Cowin & Sons, Kirkby Lonsdale with dairy bulls to 177.5p/kg and £1285.
