CALVES & WEANLINGS

A pleasing entry of calves were forward today, with several returning customers in attendance. Rearing calves sold to £540 on two occasion for British Blue x from the outstanding run of calves from JP&C Robson, Garstang who sold others at £535, Aberdeen Angus bulls at £500 and heifer calves at £460. Other stronger rearing calves sold to £410 for a British Blue x bull from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham who sold other British Blue x at £395 and Aberdeen Angus x at £390. Younger rearing calves saw British Blue x bulls sell at £380 from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with Aberdeen Agnus x bulls achieving £360 from Wallbank Farm, Over Wyresdale and heifer calves selling to £340 from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham. Other younger bull calves were generally £220 to £260 and heifers £170 to £210. Dairy bulls sold to £185 for a seven week old Holstien Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe, with a large number of very small young bull calves £40 to £70.
Several weaned calves forward saw five month old British Blue x bulls sell at £580 and £570 from A Tup, Ambleside with others achieving £550 from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel and Aberdeen Angus x at £525 from AW&AM Park, Ellel.

DAIRY

The fortnightly sale of dairy cattle saw 28 forward with cattle going to new homes throughout the Northern Counties. New calved dairy cows sold to £1700 from Barber Farms, Garstang who sold others at £1680 and £1600, with third calvers from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling sold to £1550 and others at £1520.
Todays sale featured a special consignment of British Friesian bulling heifers from RH&RA Fawcett, Burton in Kendal which sold to a top price of £1100 with others at £1080, £1060 and £1040.
Buyers are keen to attend this popular fortnightly sale, with more cattle of all classes and types required to satisfy buyer demand.

STORE CATTLE

A real buzz about the store cattle ring today, which saw all steers forward averaged £1447 and all heifers average £1262. Todays sale peaked at £2030 for a tremendous pair of Charolais x steers from JM Haddow, Milnthorpe who dominated the top prices selling Aberdeen Angus x at £2000 and Salers to £1960. Other strong well bred steers sold to £1960 for a Limousin x from DE&SM Moorhouse, Natland with Simmental x selling to £1820 from T&H Halhead, Priest Hutton and Barlow Bros, Croston. Other strong steers were regularly £1600 to £1750, with the next draw down not far behind at £1400 to £1560. Dairy bred steers sold to £1470 for MRI’s from J&H Bland & Son, Levens with Swedish Red and White selling to £1380 from A&B Pickthall, Milnthorpe and Fleckviehs selling to £1320 from JB Moore, Allithwaite.
Heifers sold to a top price of £1750 for a trio of Limousin x from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow with other Limousin x achieving £1640 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with British Blue x £1550 from AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton and Charolais x £1510 from C&B Lowther, Over Wyresdale. Native sired heifers sold to £1460 for Aberdeen Angus x from JT&GV Dobson, Grindleton. Stronger heifers were generally £1450 to £1550, with next draw down £1280 to £1350.

OTM CATTLE

Cows are coming forward in greater number each week, with over 90% of todays sale being dairy cows with farmers looking to off load passengers. Dairy cows sold to a top price of 197.5p/kg for a heavy weight Holstein Friesian from H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Nateby with others at 184.5p/kg from ME&B Mason & Son, Tatham. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows were generally 170p/kg to 180p/kg, with parlour types 140p/kg to 155p/kg and the leanest 115p/kg to 125p/kg. Top grossing dairy cow was a Holstein Friesian from ME&B Mason & Son, Tatham achieving £1538.
Beef cows sold to 229.5p/kg for a Limousin from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellett with others at 199.5p/kg for a British Blue x from A Talbot, Aughton and a Hereford x from W Pinder Jnr, Clitheroe. Other beef cows were generally 180p/kg to 190p/kg, with a keen interest in those for finishing. Top grossing today being a British Blue x from ST Birkett & Son, Carnforth achieving £1536.
OTM heifers sold to 269.5p/kg and £1425 for a Limousin x from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet with OTM steers selling to 214.5p/kg and £1394 for a Holstein Friesian from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale.
