J36 Crooklands Livestock Auction: J36 Fortnightly Sale of Store Lambs. Thursday 7th September 2023

Another increased entry of store lambs saw buyers in attendance from Devon, Cheshire, North Wales and throughout the Northern Counties. All keen to secure lambs and take advantage of the current abundance of grass. Well grown and well bred lambs attracted a high level of interest, selling to a top price of £118 for a pen of Texel x from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe. Closely followed by others at £117 from High Wardses Farm, Sedbergh with Beltex selling to £113 from AM Blackwell, Preston Patrick, others were regularly £98 to £105. Suffolk x lambs sold to £95.50 for a ring full from GC&G Taylor, Crook with others at £93 from JF & AW Sutton, Longsleddale. Hill lambs are coming forward in larger numbers now with Mules selling to £94 from H Stables, Underbarrow and Cheviot Mules at £93 from HE&M Henderson, Dent. The stronger end of Mules were generally £85 to £95, with mediums £78 to £73. Pure hill lambs sold to £90 for Cheviots from DW Potter, Shap with others at £87 from M Kitchen & S Smith, Kirkby Stephen with Herdwicks selling to £76.50 from M&G German, Middleton. An overall market averaged of £83.80 was achieved. Buyers keen to secure level pens full of lambs at this time of year, vendors are encouraged to group lambs together where possible. The next sale of store lambs is on Thursday 21st September, with buyers requesting another large entry to satisfy demand.
