DAIRY CATTLE

Buyer confidence ring side at the fortnightly sale of dairy cattle, saw new calved pedigree dairy heifers from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe sell at £2550 with others at £2450. All heifers sold averaged £1990. CALVES & WEANLINGS

The weekly sale of calves saw the largest entry forward for several years, with a total of 151 forward and sold. Rearing calves saw the strongest bulls sell to £480 for a Charolais cross from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale. British Blues sold to £465 from I Atkinson & Son, Warton and £450 from Throstle Nest Farm, Pilling with Aberdeen Angus cross also achieving £450 from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, Woodplumpton. Stronger bull calves were regularly £390 to £440. Younger rearing calves sold to £350 for Charolais cross from WG Farms, Cockerham and British Blue cross from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham.
Weaned bull calves sold to £555 for a four mouth old British Blue cross from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others selling to £540 from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel. Aberdeen Angus cross also achieved £540 from AW&AM Park, Ellel with British Blue cross achieving £530 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre.
Rearing heifer calves sold to £400 for a British Blue cross from G&ME Woodhouse & Son, Ellel with others at £390 from JM&MH Fance & Son, Littledale and £375 from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham. Stronger native sired heifers sold to £370 for Aberdeen Angus cross from Tom Barron Farms Ltd, Woodplumpton. Younger heifer calves sold to £300 for a British Blue cross from GJ&G Billington, Garstang with others at £295 from Pickervance Farm, Kirkham and Aberdeen Angus cross also achieving £295 from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall.
Weaned heifers sold to £580 for a British Blue cross from SH&M Batty & Sons, Quernmore who sold others at £540, with others at £500 from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green.
Dairy bulls saw the best rearers sell to £220 for British Friesians from JR Newsham & Son, Conder Green with month old Montbeliardes selling to £210 from GJ&G Billington, Garstang. Weaned dairy bulls sold to £290 for Holstein Friesians from RE&P Miller, Barnacre with others at £280 and £275 from WG Farms, Cockerham.

STORE CATTLE

The weekly sale of store cattle saw several returning customer both buying and selling at this popular weekly sale. Steers sold to a top of £1750 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from JT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe with Hereford cross to £1700 from M Shepherd & Son, Pilling with Limousin cross to £1650 from H Birkett & Son, Overton who also sold British Blue cross at £1640. Dairy bred steers sold to £1580 for Swedish Red and White from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton who sold others at £1540 and £1510. Holstein Friesians sold to £1350 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling with Fleckviehs to £1220 from MJ&LC Lund, Quernmore.
Heifers sold to a top price of £1600 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from JT&GV Dobson, Clitheroe with Charolais cross selling to £1550 from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall and £1500 from MJ Waller, Lupton. Other strong heifers saw Hereford cross sell to £1460 from M Shepherd & Sons, Pilling and Simmental cross to £1460 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet. All steers today averaged £1230 and heifers £1148.

OTM/CAST CATTLE

106 cull cows forward today sold to an overall market averaged of 147p/kg, for an entry comprising of predominately medium and leaner dairy cows. Only a handful of beef cows forward today which sold to a top of 219.5p/kg for a Bazadaise from BD&PM Gill, Ingleton and £1613 for a Limousin from P Cummings, Burton in Kendal. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 199.5p/kg and £1414 for a Montbeliarde from WG Farms, Cockerham with others generally 150p/kg to 165p/kg. Mediums sold to 147.5p/kg for a British Friesian from L Parsons & Son, Levens, with parlour type cows generally 105p/kg to 130p/kg and the very leanest and lightest less.
Beef heifers sold to 249.5p/kg for a Limousin from EJ&P Burrow, Storth with British Blue cross selling to £1535 from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. Dairy heifers sold to 214.5p/kg and £1507 again from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham. Other dairy heifers were generally 185p/kg to 200p/kg.
Beef bred steers sold to 259.5p/kg and £1930 for Aberdeen Angus cross from J Oddie & Son, Blackburn who sold others at £1865 and £1725. Dairy steers sold to 204.5p/kg and £1124 for a Holstein Friesian from H Birkett & Son, Overton.
Stock bulls sold to 179.5p/kg for a Charolais from PJ Holt & Sons, Blackpool with a Limousin from AG Riley Ltd, Nether Kellet selling at £1537. Dairy bulls sold to 139.5p/kg and £1369 for a Holstein Friesian from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth.
