Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, OTM, Dairy and Store Cattle, Friday 5th May 2023.

CALVES & WEANLINGS

A younger show of calves this week, with once again new customers in attendance both buying and selling. Bull calves sold to £370, £360 and £355 for British Blue x bulls from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham with other British Blue x bulls also achieving £355 from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale. Medium beef calves were £280-£320, with the younger end £180-£240. Native sired calves sold to £335 for an Aberdeen Angus x from Lawsons Farm, Cockerham with younger calves selling to £215 again for Aberdeen Angus x from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale. An increased entry of dairy bull calves saw a well reared Holstein Friesians from H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Nateby achieve £270, with stronger rearing sorts to £180 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham and mediums generally selling at £80-£120, depending on quality and age.
Heifer calves sold to £470 twice, with another four at £450 for well reared Simmental x from JR Newham & Son, Conder Green. Weaned British Blue x heifers sold to £410 from RA Fisher, Lytham St Annes. Rearing heifers sold to £340 for British Blue x from Wallbank Farms Ltd, Over Wyresdale with Aberdeen Angus’s selling to £275 from Lawsons Farm Ltd, Cockerham.
Next week will includes the special mid-monthly sale of weaned and reared calves.

DAIRY CATTLE

Dairy heifer sold to £1720 for a trio of new calved Holstein Friesian from R&K Jenkinson, Pilling. More dairy cattle of all types are required to satisfy our buyers ring side.

STORE CATTLE

A fast and furious trade for store cattle today saw all sold averaging £1268, to include six month old Belted Galloway steers, up to 31 month old Limousin x steers.
Todays sale peaked at £1880 for a single Limousin x steer from H Chapman & Son, Middleton who sold other at £1800, these cattle having previously been purchased at the NWA J36 suckler calf sale. Over aged steers sold to £1840 for a Saler from JC Dunning, Orton. Other heavy well fleshed steers sold to £1800 for an Aberdeen Angus from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe with others at £1760 from G GU&D Swarbrick, Grange Over Sand and Hereford x to £1740 from JD EM JA Atkinson, Kendal. Dairy bred steers sold to £1560 for Holstein Friesians from GR Park & Sons, Whinfell. British Friesians sold to £1440 from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe. There was a keen interest in steers suitable for grazing with 14 month old British Blues selling to £1250, with other steers £1080-£1150.
Heifers sold to £1710 for an Aberdeen Angus x from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe who sold others at £1700 and £1660. Charolais x sold to £1660 from JA&F Nutter, Clitheroe with British Blue x selling to £1550 from WT Eastham & Son, Goosnargh. Limousin x sold to £1460 from J Fisher & Son, Preston. As with the steers, there was a keen interest in heifers suitable for grazing with these generally selling at £980-£1150.
Next week will include the special mid month sale of farmer stirks, young stores and feeding bulls, with a large entry required to satisfy buyer’s demand.

OTM CATTLE

NWA Lancaster once again proved to be the leading cull cow market, with an overall market average of 195p/kg with only four beef cows in this averaged. Beef cows sold to 239.5p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x from J Pendlebury, Wigan with a Limousin x at 219.5p/kg from EJ&P Burrow, Storth and Stabiliers from RW&SJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore also achieving 219.5p/kg. Top grossing beef cow was a Limousin from EJ&P Burrow achieving £1760.
Dairy cows saw Fleckvieh sell to 224.5p/kg and £1755 from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal with British Friesian selling to 219.5p/kg and £1416 from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe and Holstein Friesian selling to 209.5p/kg and £1715 again from JS&KM Wilson & Son, Kendal. Other heavy well fleshed dairy cows regularly sold at 215p/kg-220p/kg, with parlour type cows making up the main of todays sale selling at 185p/kg-205p/kg.
OTM heifers sold to 259p/kg and £1678 for a Aberdeen Angus x from EJ&P Burrow, Storth with dairy heifers selling to 241.5p/kg from JW&DL Park, Ellel and £1652 from J&M Robinson, Over Kellet.
Steers sold to 249.5p/kg for a Hereford x from A Kirkby & Co, Pilling with other Hereford x selling to £1495 from A&CM Carter, Witherslack.
A single Holstein Friesian stock bull achieving 179p/kg and £1567 from RE&P Miller, Garstang.
