Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Sale of Calves, Dairy, OTM and Store Cattle, Friday 9th September 2022.

Calves & Weanlings
The weekly sale at Lancaster saw 62 calves forward with the entry being predominately younger 4-6 weeks olds. Bull calves sold to £635 for a British Blue x from JP&C Robson, Garstang who sold others at £355 followed by GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth also selling British Blues at £355 and J Bargh & Son, Morecambe to £350. Simmental x bull calves sold to £320 from TM Townley, Over Wyresdale. Month old Charolais x bull calves from JE&S Seedall, Mellor sold to £280 and £270. Native sired bull calves sold to £320 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel who sold others at £300 with young Aberdeen Angus x bull calves achieving £200 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale. Dairy bull calves today sold to £200 for a Montbeliarde from T&G Parkinson, Out Rawcliffe with Holstein Friesians to £110 from AD&R Milner, Garstang. Heifer calves sold to £345 for a British Blue x from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with others at £335 from Barker Farms, Carnforth and £295 from B&JM Crowe, Witherslack. Hereford x heifers from TE&M Kidd, Ellel sold to £200.

Dairy Cattle
There was no shortage of quality or demand at the fortnightly sale of dairy cattle, with several purchasers leaving empty handed. Heifers sold to a top price of £2480 for a two week calved pedigree heifer from JE&J Pye, Quernmore. This was closely followed by Andrew Swale, Blackburn selling a 34 litre pedigree heifer at £2400. A heifer from B&V Swan, Chorley sold to a final bid of £2020. All heifers averaged £2300.
The next dairy sale in on Friday 23rd September to include the Autumn prize show for cows and heifers, open to all vendors. This day will also feature the 1st part dispersal of the milking portion of the herd, on behalf of WA Gardner & Son, Lytham who are retiring from milking.

Store Cattle
Store cattle numbers are increasing week on week with 348 forward, the sale peaked at £1800 for a trio of Simmental x steers from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale who sold another trio at £1760, this was closely followed by a pair of Charolais x from R&EA Gardner, Kendal achieving £1710. Limousin x steers sold to £1660 from J Prest & Son, Bay Horse with British Blues to £1560 from Pilling Hall, Pilling. Native sired steers sold to £1700 for a Hereford x from RH Dodgson, Burton in Lonsdale with Aberdeen Angus x selling to £1600 from J Hartley, Woodplumpton. Dairy bred steers sold to £1380 for a Montbeliarde from A&B Pickthall, Milnthorpe, with Holstein Friesian to £1220 from J Hartley, Woodplumpton. All steers forward today averaged £1124.
Store heifers sold to £1440 from a trio of Aberdeen Angus x from J Tattersall, Lytham and a pair of British Blue x from JD&GM Bracken, Catterall. Charolais sold to £1420 from JW&L Barker, Arkholme with Limousins to £1320 from T&E Garlick & Son, Freckleton, British Blue x achieved £1350 from J Harley & Son, Woodplumpton and Hereford x also achieving £1350 from JW Atkinson, Bentham. All heifers averaged £1120.

OTM Cattle
117 OTM cattle sold to an overall market average of 154.6p/kg with a large number of dairy cows now coming forward ahead of lying in. Beef cows sold to a top price of 214p/kg for a Limousin x from TE JS & SA Carruthers, Underbarrow. Other heavy beef cows sold to 197p/kg for a Simmental from WK&R Harrison, Arkholme. Beef cows suitable for further finishing were regularly 150-180p/kg depending on quality and type. Dairy cows sold to 197.5p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from H&A Stephenson, Carnforth with others achieving 189.5p/kg from AT Burrow & Son, Hornby and K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows were generally 160-180p/kg with mediums 130-150p/kg and parlour types 105-130p/kg depending on quality and type. Top grossing today was a Holstein Friesian from SW&K Metcalfe & Son, Whittington achieving £1564 closely followed by another Holstein Friesian from Lawsons Farm ltd, Cockerham and a Simmental from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man at £1453.
OTM heifers sold to a top price of 217.5p/kg for a Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe with beef heifers selling to 214.5p/kg for a Aberdeen Angus x from Messrs Holgate, Silverdale. Top grossing heifer was a Holstein Friesian from GH Sanderson & Family, Catforth achieving £1385.
OTM steers sold to 204.5p/kg and £1312 for a Holstein Friesian from DR Preston, Caton who sold others at 201.5p/kg and £1279.
Cull bulls sold to 144p/kg and £1307 for a Hereford from Ballacutchel Farms, Isle of Man and 129p/kg and £1529 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Gibson & Berry, Endmoor.
