Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Auction Mart Sale of Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 20th May 2022.

Calves & Weanlings
Another strong trade at Lancaster today saw British Blue bulls top the market at eight weeks old selling to £460 from AD&R Milner, Claughton in Brock. Other British Blue bulls sold to £415 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with five week old British Blue bulls to £375 and £365 from J Bargh & Son, Heaton with Oxcliffe. Native bull calves were eagerly bid for today as Aberdeen Angus sold to £455 from Wallbank Farms, Over Wyresdale whom sold others to £410 and £390. This was followed by the consignment from J&G Thornley selling Aberdeen Angus bull calves to £455 and £405. Hereford bull calves sold to £350 from J Gerrard & Son, Thurnham. The heifer calf trade peaked at £360 for a British Blue from J&G Thornley, Kirkham with plenty of good heifers selling in excess of £300. Black and White bull calves were a sharper trade selling to £195 and £135 from Wallbank Farms with others to £135 and £132 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. All Friesian bull calves forward averaged £94.86.

Store Cattle
The trade remains buoyant around the Lancaster store ring with less short keep cattle and more summering grazing type cattle forward this week. Limousin bullocks topped the market today at £1600 for a pair from DE&SM Moorehouse, Natland. Other Continental bullocks saw Charolais sell to £1520 from EE Thornton & Sons, Heaton. Native cattle always sell well in Lancaster with Aberdeen Angus bullocks selling to £1570 from KH&D Holden & Son, Pilling with others to £1500 from J&H Davis, Cabus. Hereford bullocks sold to £1450 from H Hesketh & Sons, Longton.
The heifer trade peaked at £1400 for British Blues from J&M Cockett, Ingleton. Aberdeen Angus sold to £1390 from J Oddie & Son, Balderstone. Dairy bullocks saw Brown Swiss sell to £1220 from EJ Hodgson & Son, Kendal with British Friesian bullocks peaking at £1160 from EE Thornton & Son, Heaton.

Cast / OTM Cattle
More, more, more that’s how we like it at Lancaster! The most cattle seen forward for some time with the highest prices and averages achieved in recent months as 131 cast cattle averaged an impressive 193p/kg. A tremendous run of Charolais cows from E&M Fairhurst, Austwick stole the headlines selling to 244.5p/kg, 239.5p/kg three times and 237.5p/kg. This impressive run of Charolais cows sold to £2406, £2335, £2317, £2238, £2208 and £2203. Limousin cows sold to 244.5p/kg form M&L Preece, Kirkby Lonsdale with Limousin cows peaking at £1927 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. The dairy cow trade saw plenty of well meated cows sell between 200-210p/kg. Holstein Friesian cows sold to £1732 from Drinkall Bros, Over Wyresdale with others to £1665 from the same home. Plenty sold around the £1500 mark.
