Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, 16th May 2022.

Spring Lambs
An increased entry of spring lambs forward today with just shy of 200 forward selling to a much improved trade with a lot more interest seen from buyers ringside. An overall market average of 310p/kg or £132 a head was achieved. Trade peaked at £150 numerous times from JR Gorst, Dolphinholme with Texels, D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe and S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with Beltex lambs. This was closely followed by the run from J Burr, Quernmore selling Texel and Charollais lambs to £147, £144 and £142. Texel lambs sold to £142 from P Metcalfe, Old Parkside Farm. Plenty more sold in the region of £140.
Spring lambs peaked at 375p/kg for a Beltex from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth, plenty of pens of better confirmation lambs sold in excess of 340p/kg.
More and more buyers are now requesting spring lambs on a Monday morning, with vendors urged to take advantage of the early week trade.

Prime Hoggs
The trade for prime hoggs remains buoyant and strong with plenty of demand for all speciation’s. W&J Livesey, Inskip run of heavy hoggs led the way selling Texels to £146, £143, £143 and £140 with Suffolks from the same home achieving £140. Heavy weight Charollais peaked at £141 from A Butler, Hambleton with plenty of pens of hoggs selling in the region of £130.
Handy weighted hoggs remain in plenty of demand averaging 249p/kg. Peaking at 293p/kg from JM Kelsall & Son, Quernmore.

Cast Sheep

The cast sheep trade was sharper this morning with pure bred Texel ewes selling to £180 from B&M Slater, Chipping with Texel x ewes to £154 from JE Parkinson & Son, Quernmore. A large quantity of Texel x ewes sold between £140 and £150, with all Texel ewes forward averaging £140.50. Zwartble ewes sold to £156 from JR Gorst, Dolphinholme followed by Suffolk ewes to £154 from Joseph Park, Aughton. Mule ewes peaked at £138 from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with plenty of big Mule ewes selling around the £130 mark with all Mules forward averaging £125.12. Horned ewes saw Swaledales sell to £112 from T Ayrton & Sons, Over Wyresdale with others to £110 from S Park, Aughton. All cast sheep forward today averaged £116.24.
