Lancaster Livestock Auction: Lancaster Calves, OTM and Store Cattle - Friday 11th March 2022

Calves & Weanlings

A cracking run of British Blue and Fleckvieh weanlings from EW&R Towers, Hornby stole the headlines today in Lancaster with British Blue bulls at four months old sold to £505 and Fleckviehs selling to £500, £455, £450, £425, £420 and £415. Five week old British Blue bulls peaked at £410 from Walmsley Beef, Cockerham. Other British Blue bulls sold to £350 from RE&P Miller, Barnacre. British Blue heifers sold to £270 from JP&C Robson, Garstang. Younger beef calves saw slightly less trade than in previous weeks, as a busy ring of buyers seem cautious toward the spiralling feed costs. Black and White bull calves twice sold to £120 from C&J Smith, St Michaels and RE&P Miller, Barnacre.

Store Cattle

Lancaster continues to boast a strong trade for store cattle, as short keep cattle continue to be a strong trade. Simmental steers led the way selling to £1560, with others to £1420 from EJ Burrow, Milnthorpe. Limousin bullocks sold to £1530 and £1520 from H Chapman & Son, Middleton. This was followed by other Limousin bullocks to £1460 from TA Chapman & Son, Kendal. Charolais bullocks peaked at £1400 from EJ Ward & Sons, Nether Kellet. The heifer trade this week twice peaked at £1380 for British Blues from J&JM Walmsley, Pilling and a pen of three Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1380 from J Oddie & Son, Balderstone. Dairy heifers sold to £1300 from EW&R Towers, Hornby for Norwegian Reds.

OTM Cattle

A bumper entry of 144 OTM cattle were forward which were met by a bumper trade, with an impressive overall market average of 164p/kg achieved. OTM steers led the way from PM&ST Entwistle, Abbeystead with Limousin selling to 264.5p/kg, grossing at £1692 and £1589. Aberdeen Angus steers sold to 224.5p/kg from JH Woof & Son, Kendal which grossed at £1542. OTM dairy heifers sold to 214.5p/kg or £1480 from H Halhead & Son, Nether Kellet. Beef cows were in strong demand today with Limousin selling to 214.5p/kg or £1688 from JE&AC Clarke & Son, Melling. As British Blue cows topped at 209.5p/kg or £1904 from A&P Hodgkinson, Stalmine. Other leading prices for beef cast cows was £1594 for a Limousin from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. Plenty more beef cows were regularly selling either side of the £1400 mark. Dairy cows sold to a colossal top price of £1533 from H&SD Cornthwaite & Son, Nateby. This was followed by other dairy cows to £1405 from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel, £1355 from ME&B Mason & Son, Caton and £1342 from Cote Farm Partnership, Nether Kellet. A large number of dairy cows sold in the region of £1300, with the best meated dairy cows today sold between 180-185p/kg. The demand for OTM cattle looks strong for the near future, with vendors urged to take advantage as soon as possible and sell live. All OTM cattle forward averaged a very impressive £1042.
